December 30, 2010

Poppy is home today! I’m gonna work on getting in some extra lovin I can tell ya! Just couldn’t wait to get outside to potty, have my treats (I always gotta do the tricks for Mamaw first though) and get belly rubs. Poppy has that special way of “makin me tap dance” that is so special; Frankly, I wish he’d never stop…

Somebody did a bad thing to Mamaw’s car!!!! When she was out on errands the other day, somebody hit her front, right bumper. Poppy asked her last evening if “she hit something” when she was out and my Lord—she bounced off the couch like a speeding bullet and went to look. I thought she was gonna cry—but she got mad instead so Poppy and I decided we’d best let her cool down.

Well, this morning Poppy thinks they should go wash the car and go to Charles Gabus Ford and have them take a look at it—ya know; get an estimate? So they left me—high and dry. When they got home, Mamaw was still pretty upset—the estimate is $500 and she lost her favorite mitten! Life could get rough around here today so maybe Poppy and I should take a nap.

December 29, 2010

Why is it at Christmas time there are so many errands to run for heaven’s sakes? Mamaw has just been in and out so much she forgot to tell ya that Ron from Home Pro’s, Inc. came and put the new glass in the window. That was 3 days ago—she still doesn’t have her drapes “draped” (that’s what she calls it.)

Poor Poppy—I just don’t get to see enough of that guy! He’s been over-worked and just runs from one examination room to the next. “Poppy, why are ya so busy this time of year anyway,” I asked him? And he told me that some people have a “cafeteria plan” with their office insurance and it has to be used by December 31st so everybody is rushin his office to get that done. I bet he’s gonna be pleased when this year is over…do ya think?

More errands—I just shake my head. She did do one good thing though and Poppy is very proud of that! She took that Nook e-reader back to Barnes and Noble and asked them for help (this is the 3rd time, I think.) So, they credited back the reader without wi-fi and then she bought the reader with wi-fi. Now she can go shopping for her new books at home. Just make sure if ya buy one of these modern technology dudes, that you buy the one with wi-fi IF YOU DON’T HAVE IT IN YOUR HOUSE…otherwise ya gotta go where wi-fi is offered any time you want to buy a book. Mamaw is now a very happy camper—Poppy is a happy camper—and I’m gonna be a happy camper too! Maybe she’ll stay home more…

December 28, 2010

Oh boy—it’s kinda hard to figure out what Poppy and Mamaw are up to this morning…Poppy is lookin for clothes that are yellow and black and she’s sayin, “I’ll get the errands done first and then I’ll shower and change too! Off to work Poppy goes wearin yellow and black—looked mighty impressive too.
I asked Mamaw what THAT was all about and she said the Insight Bowl was on tonight at 9:00 p.m. The Iowa Hawkeye’s (big 10) is playin against the University of Missouri (big 12) for the PRIZE! And even though Poppy has a BIG, BIG day, they’ve been invited to go over to Becky’s and join the crowd to watch the game.

And today is the day Ozzie has to have surgery on his mouth. Mamaw says I can’t see him today cause he’s gonna be “fragile” with the stitches they gonna put there to close the gap. Hope the “thing” they cut out of him isn’t more cancer…we gotta pray about that!

December 27, 2010

We’re lookin at doin nuttin honey today! Mamaw has already warned me that she wants to write all day and try to make contacts with people who share her love of writing. So you might say that unless I kick up a “fuss,” I’m on my own today!

Poppy of course is goin to the salt mine and we did fix his lunch. I always go help her with that cause somehow or other she always drops 2 Corn Chips on the floor. I just get right busy and latch on to em before she can retrieve em!

Ozzie was out today and I WANTED OUT TO SEE HIM. I was so hipper she refused to let me out until I would agree to wear my leash. Now—what’s that all about anyway? Haven’t I proven to her that I can be trusted off leash by now? I didn’t argue with her BEFORE we went out cause she might get mad at me and make me stay in the house. I’ll discuss that subject with her after…

December 26, 2010

Aw yes, the day after...Sunday this year.  I tried to talk Mamaw into staying in her pj's all day cause that's what Dodi said she was gonna do but she just couldn't--didn't feel right about that she said.  And Poppy?  Well, the poor guy has to go off to the DUNGEON to work--he said, "It might be pretty slow today but if somebody breaks their glasses we gotta be there for them anyway."  He's such a great fella--thoughtful too!

Ozzie has to have surgery on his mouth one day this week and I wanta see him just as much as I can.  I could "smell the big boy" out so I started in with my hissy fit and she took me out--and WITHOUT A LEASH!  I ran right down the sidewalk to my Ozzie and gave him a great big kiss!  We had our time together and parting is always bittersweet but ya know, our toes get cold and we can't just stay out forever.  And Becky is gonna go out today and tonight so she's gotta run now.  Bye Becky--see ya later Ozzie my love...

December 25, 2010 (HO, HO, HO--MERRY CHRISTMAS)

Mamaw was up very, very early this morning—cookin! The kids are comin (except for those in Michigan) and she’s a little sad…But she greeted me with HO, HO, HO—MERRY CHRISTMAS! Bah, humbug…

When she was getting herself all duded up for the day, she was sittin on the edge of the waterbed tryin to put on her “sockies” and I tried and tried to get each of them…and do you know what she told Poppy? She said, “Miss Scarlett is never satisfied—I gave her one of my old socks and she isn’t happy with that. She is a “sock-o-holic”—one sock is too many and a hundred is not enough.” Boy—she hit the nail on the head on that one…suppose that’s how she feels about falling off the bandwagon with her diet?

Mamaw is in the kitchen trying to get all of the stuff put together for her kids and grand kids—the chili is on (smells good too) and she’s got all kinds of dips and crackers and cheese and vegetables—way more than the “crew” will eat. Poppy told her she plans TOO MUCH STUFF (I for one think he is right but we gotta let HER figure that out).

December 24, 2010 (Christmas Eve)

It is Christmas Eve Day and Mamaw has promised when she gets some of her work done we’d get Ozzie and Pepper and go out back in our hard and make SNOW ANGELS AND SNOW DOGS! I’m tryin to be patient Mamaw—but hurry!

The snow was comin down very softly and Mamaw was SO EXCITED—poor Poppy—he has to work again…to buy my food you know. Well, it was hard for me to figure out where to go potty with all the snow. The sidewalks were all covered over and I didn’t get a good feel for my own area so I just did my thing…now; trying to poop was another thing entirely. I held it just as long as I could and right in the middle of my dictatin my blog to her, I almost had a “hissy fit” getting out in time. Made it though…

Finally—we are finished with the blog for the day and the first load of laundry is done. She gets all duded up in her outside clothes and invites me to come along. NO WAY! By that time trucks and people were out scooping and it just made me really uncomfortable. I wouldn’t even go out from the big sliding doors downstairs. There just comes a time when ya have to put your foot down…I DID!

December 23, 2010

Poppy is home today! I am SO HAPPY!!! He went out and started his car and I though there was goin to be a ride comin my way—I WAS WRONG…he left without me. Mamaw said, “Oh Miss Scarlett, you can’t go every time the car pulls out of the driveway ya know.”

He had so many errands to run and Mamaw was runnin around here cleanin the kitchen appliances and makin sure she’s got what she needs for THE BIG DAY. I’m still pretty pooped out from my haircut so I’m just goin to lie around and “veg out.” Well, that is till I see or “smell” Ozzie then I gotta get her attention and have her take me out to see him. That big fella—he loved my haircut too! He got just a little frisky out in public and I got a little worried there for a minute. Ozzie loves Mamaw too—he always puts his head up to her for attention—it is so sweet.

Poppy invited Mamaw out on the town tonight! He got a wonderful gift card to NICKS and he said they needed to go have a cocktail and dinner. That was the plan…

December 22, 2010

Mamaw asked me today what I was thankful for this year.  I told her I was thankful I got to meet My MAMA, I've done some traveling, I've learned lots of new things (thanks Mamaw), I've got great human parents, good food, lots and lots of love and the waterbed.  I've become close to a number of canines and consider them to be my friends.  I'm thankful that Ozzie's cancer seems to be in remission or somethin--I adore him.  I've appreciated my rides in the car and the smells they let me experience.  And most of all, I'm thankful that Poppy can still work so we can buy my good food...what are you thankful for?  See the envelope at the bottom of my post?  Please leave your messages for me about "your thankful heart" there.

Mamaw left for a while this mornin to go to the bank on business.  She saw Courtney; she's the very first person they met at the bank when they moved to West Des Moines.  Well, it took a phone call and some "deep thinkin" but they figured it out.  She came home hummin I'm Dreamin Of A White Christmas.  Good so far...

December 21, 2010

Alright--some new AND EXCITING HAPPENDED AROUND HERE TODAY!!!  It was the most "happended" day in a while too.  The doorbell rang and I got busy protectin my Mamaw till the door opened and it was Steve and Jessie...you know, those humans that took care of me the day Mamaw and Poppy had to go to Mason City on business?  Well, I wanted to give them a "thank you gift" so we had dropped that off for them last week.  And here they were, standin there with a BIG RED BAG and it was For Me!  I was so excited and I almost jumped up on Jessie but that's a no-no you know.  I'm an aristocratic cocker spaniel and I'm not allowed...I just nearly goofed...but that's better than wetting myself!!!

Steve opened my package and I got a whole plate of food (just for me) and every one of them squeak!  I got a baked potato, corn on the cobb and a dinner roll!  And to top it off, there is an animal and some rope-like stuff so Mamaw and I can play "tug."  I am so happy--BUT OH, OH--I didn't get anything for Pepper...should I?  If I do will Pepper think at this point it's "over-kill"?  Mamaw said I should just leave it alone and send a very nice thank you so that's been decided.

December 20, 2010

If life got any more BORING around here we’d be standin still…oops; that’s not what Mamaw would say though! I got treats from my groomer and she’s been givin me 1 EACH DAY—AND I’ve thrown up each day too! That makes lots of extra work for Mamaw and I see that look in her eyes when she sees what I’ve done. Please Mamaw—no more of those treats!!! I don’t want to make extra work for ya…so help me out?

She went shoppin today and she said she spent lots of $$$$. She loves to entertain and has all kinds of “junk food” she’s putting together for Christmas Day. And the OystersLOTS OF EM POPPY—just for you and Dodi!!! It took her an hour to just put stuff away and God only knows how long it took her to shop for all that stuff.

December 19, 2010

Mamaw’s a little lazy today—I think she’s catchin a cold! She doesn’t “bundle up” good enough to go out with me and she really got cold the other day when she took Ozzie and Me outside. Ozzie likes to go way down to the trail (even when the wind is blowin up his you know what) to do his job and I kinda like to stay closer to home. I make myself go though—if he’s out.

I hear complainin that there’s nothing on TV and she isn’t at all interested in the computer or reading today. Yep—she’s got a fever and just wants to stay under the porch. I’m not gonna go out with her anymore if she doesn’t do a better job of keeping herself warm!

December 18, 2010

Seems like we just don't get to relax anymore...Mamaw was out the door before Poppy this morning--and she was "gussied up" too!  She's spending the day with Dodi and she'll get to see Max BUT I WON'T!  I like that little weiner dog; and he's the same color as me...hope he can come down and play with me sometime.

Poppy has to work again--I know; so I can have my "favorite things."  Well, ya know it takes a couple of days for me to get back to normal after I have one of those throwin up sessions so I'll be content in my kennel.  Mamaw had purchased a new pad for in there cause Poppy thought we should so I have that and its blue, and "fits to a T" and it's warm.  And so then Poppy took my little "fuzzy" one and folded it in half making a pillow out of it for me.  I tell ya--I got the best of everything!!!!

December 17, 2010

Mamaw got around and got "gussied up" again right away--she has to get her car down to Toyota of Des Moines by 10:00 a.m.  Yep--you'll never believe what came in the mail?  A RECALL LETTER...she told Poppy--"Oh no, this car has been so good and now this."  Sometimes that's the way it is...

She started her car after she let me outside; and Poppy started his car too!  I'm lookin from one to the other to see if by chance I get to go for a ride.  I have to hold that pose; with the sad brown eyes--and WAIT!  Finally Mamaw said, "You want to go for a ride"?  I was ready--so ready I couldn't hold still for her to get me leashed up!  She put me in Poppy's car and he pulled out of the driveway.  I look back and I'm wonderin what SHE'S GONNA DO.  But then I felt better cause she followed us; well a little ways anyway.

When we got to Toyota, Mamaw had beat us there!  She went on the Interstate and Poppy took I-235--she thinks she's so smart!  Anyway, car is in to be checked and here she comes out the door.  I slide over so she can "share" the seat with me.  She gets her seat belt all snugged up and away we go.

December 16, 2010

I had to get brushed and "gussied up" first thing this morning!  I'm gonna go give out my gifts purchased for "very special people in my life."  While Mamaw was gettin herself fixed up; Poppy made some phone calls to see who would be available.
I'm sure happy Poppy put those wonderful "seat warmers" on to keep my butt warm, and he even started the car so it was warm inside.

I made a quick "squat" so I wouldn't have any accidents and off we went!  My first special person is Miss Jessica, my veterinarian that has cared for me lovingly ALL YEAR!  And I had a couple of "doozies" for her to fix too!  Once I swallowed an ear plug and it plugged everything up--that wasn't good.  And another time she had to e-ray my tummy to see why I was sick so she deserves a really nice "thank you."

December 15, 2010

Mr. John came by today to see about our weather stripping needs. You know, he’s that good lookin dude I fell for but don’t tell Ozzie—he might not appreciate that! John said it all looks pretty darned good and Mamaw said we weren’t taking the doors off to do another thing then. He did fix the doors so they closed a little tighter—ya know; try to hold down on the heat? Mamaw and Poppy are old—they need more heat than you and I do!

Other than that, we have a pretty quiet morning all in all. Poppy is off to work AS USUAL so I gotta wait a long time for him to get to come home…and so at our house, it’s all about Christmas. Poppy bought the cards and gift cards and got busy first thing this morning getting em ready to mail. Mamaw will do that later today when she is out on errands.

December 14, 2010

I stood at the door with Poppy and BEGGED HIM NOT TO GO TO WORK TODAY! You know what he said to me about that? He said, “Poppy has to go to work so we can buy your food, and so you can see Miss Jessica when you are sick, and for all those new toys Mamaw seems to drag home.” I couldn’t argue with that…see you tonight after work Poppy…hurry home so I can kiss, kiss and kiss you!!!

Mamaw has that new NOOK e-reader and I can’t get her to pay any attention to me! Question for ya: What do ya call an AVID READER? A Book HOUND.   I wanted a little bit of humor for ya today…

There is lots of comings and goings around here too! Trip after trip to the post office and Mamaw says ya gotta stand in line a long time. And she’s spending lots of time at the Barnes and Noble Book Store—she loves that place! She says she’s been Christmas shoppin there.

December 13, 2010

It's beginning to "smell a lot like Christmas" around here.  Everybody is comin and goin and I'm stayin home!
This morning it was Poppy's turn.  He had so many errands to run and so many Christmas cards to pick out.  And he has to go to the bank--and to HyVee and oh my gosh; don't really know what all he's to do.

Mamaw is busy getting the house picked up and puttin the "living flowers" in front of the sliding glass doors downstairs where they can capture the sunlight.  And by Lord...she's carryin a basket with dirty clothes in it!  She can't do that yet--she's got bleach water and cleaning rags and Poppy's hankies soakin in the washer.  She realized right away she was gonna have to get the ball rolling.  By noon she was done with the laundry and was cleaned up.

I noticed today now that the weather isn't so great that she isn't wearin "quite as much" jewelry.  Well, she just has to cover it up with her coat and scarf anyway so what's the big deal right?

December 12, 2010

I had quite a challenge this morning trying to “do my duty.” Mamaw decided to take me downstairs and out the double doors and believe me—I wasn’t interested! She brought me upstairs and out the front door—I wasn’t interested! I’m askin myself what I’m gonna do today to relieve myself. We got 3-5 inches of new snow so when I go out my paws sink in…my tummy gets wet…the wind is blowin my “personal belongings” around and I just can’t handle that first thing in the morning!

Now Mamaw—she’s a good egg! Out she went in her pj’s with the snow shovel and scooped the front deck and the bottom deck. I still couldn’t handle it. She got all bundled up again and out she went with the scoop again and scooped a private area just for me. When she came in she asked Poppy if he remembered her doing that when I was tiny. He did—cause she cut the grass low for me on my first day home with them and then when it snowed 27 ½ inches last winter, she would scoop areas “with my name on it.”

DM Register + Freedom Rock, Greenfield, IA

Mamaw says I'm so smart--we just put the Freedom Rock outing on my blog and in the Register today there is quite an article about Slipnot and his interest in the ROCK.

Just type in: dmregister.com to read this article.  It's kinda neat!

Miss Scarlett O'Hara

December 11, 2010

When we got up this morning there is measurable snow on the ground. First trip out Mamaw wouldn’t let me drag her down the hill cause she was afraid she’d fall down. I think I got better traction than she does. But the 2nd time around—well, it was Ozzie out there and I JUST HAD TO SEE HIM and wish him a “happy snow day.” Mamaw made me go downstairs and let me out the big double doors without a leash! Well, I had to poop first (darn it) but then I ran right over to Ozzie and Becky. Becky was worried cause she noticed right away “no leash” and Mamaw said, “I’ve been working with Miss Scarlett off leash and decided to try this today. That was perfectly fine with me…I got rubs and smells and all that good stuff from MY OZZIE so I’m good to go the rest of the day now.

Poppy didn’t have to work today and it’s a good thing! The snow came down faster, the wind came up, and it was blowing everywhere. We wanted to go on a walk but the minute we stepped foot on the sidewalk it WAS SLICK! Not a walk day—at least that’s what Mamaw says.

We all worked on our own projects for the day. Some of those included: getting stuff looked at for taxes, reading and writin stuff, lookin stuff up and a well deserved nap. Poppy and I were just pooped out and after all—there is JUST SO MUCH ONE CAN DO…

December 10, 2010

Bob from Home Pro’s is comin today to put in our new window and finish weather stripping the windows. So Mamaw is busy movin everything out of the way. Oh my Lord—it’s a BIG JOB! So everything in this house is in an uproar again…hope this kinda stuff ends soon…there was so much noise in the house I just wanted to scream and I think Poppy felt the same way. We shut ourselves in the office and let Mamaw take care of the business. Poppy had to write the check though…she didn’t want to be responsible for that! In the evening she made the comment that she thought it was warmer in the living room—is she right; or is she hopin?

I got a great walk again—Off Leash. My nose gets to capture all of those wonderful “dog smells” that people just don’t give a hang about. And when she comes at me with the leash to “get hooked back up”—well, I’m not going there I can tell ya. Ya hear me—I’m not going there! Give me a break Mamaw—I’m a BIG GIRL NOW!

Poppy rested all afternoon. We had a big day and evening in Mason City and he’s pooped. Mamaw and me—we just kinda do our own thing. She started to dust the furniture and then just announced that SHE WAS GOING ON ANOTHER WALK! She didn’t invite me—I would have gone too.  But when she takes her “diet walk” she goes evermore fast and I don’t enjoy that. I don’t want to take a chance on missin one single smell I need to know about. My theory is: You don’t know what “smells” you can’t live without until you find it.” I stole that from Mamaw but don’t tell her. When she goes shopping she always says, “You don’t know what you CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT until you find it”…same thing only people and dogs are somewhat different.

December 9, 2010

Up early--Mamaw dragged my "travel kennel" up from the basement.  She's all dressed up to go someplace and so is Poppy!  Oh good--we're goin somewhere today!  WRONG...  She rushes me around like I'm some kind of old driftwood or somethin and then throws some "stuff" in my travel bag and she picked up the kennel with one hand and escorted me to Jessie and Steve's house.

That's not bad!  I get to see Pepper.  Sometimes Pepper gets territorial with me and other times it goes pretty good.  Maybe that's the reason for the kennel?  Anyway, SHE INFORMS ME THAT I'M TO STAY WITH THEM TODAY!  Good Lord!  What have I done now?  Yeah, I know I threw up on the carpet the other day but I thought she was over that by now...  and off she goes without even lookin back!

Now don't get me wrong--I really like this family BUT THEY'RE NOT MY FAMILY!  I am worried maybe they won't come back for me.  I sat and watched out the window until noon waitin on em...and when Jessie took me out to go potty I headed straight for home.  I pulled and tugged and dug my nails in to try to get there--but to no avail.  I'm not gonna pee in their yard I tell ya, I'm not!  Pepper might get mad at me if I do for heaven's sakes!

December 8, 2010

Mamaw had to do a little "touch-up" on that big window this morning.  She told Poppy she's gonna wait until early Friday morning to clean it cause the paint is still "sticky."  He thought that was a good idea.

She picked up the towels from my "accidents" yesterday and ran that darned Rainbow all over the floor.  It sure looks better though so she decided the work was well worth it.  I just stayed out of her way!

She invited me to "go off leash" on a walk today.  Oh, how good it felt to have no restrictions!  I could smell, and smell and not be at her beck and call.  I purposely let her get ahead of me a number of times and I just held back to see if she would look back for me--she did.  And then I'd run so fast my ears blew straight back in the air and it was WONDERFUL...I felt like a puppy again.

December 7, 2010

Mamaw's gonna paint the new double-window.  She had to call the neighbor to come help "boost" the window up so she could get blocks under it.  (Now, that was a BIG JOB for Jessie!)  Then she gets her stuff dragged downstairs (3 loads of stuff I might add) and opened the paint.  She made sure it was the right stuff though, cause she opened the big double doors down there and "tested a spot" and it was cold outside.  Hurry, Mamaw, shut the door!!!  I think she thought she was doing a "Monet" or something the way she babied the paint job.  But, when finished it looked very nice...she was proud.

And while she was painting the window, I threw up twice on the carpet--she wasn't able to keep an eye on me so I probably found "something that didn't agree with me" in the basement."  Oh, was she upset now!  I couldn't look her in the eye and she quickly just directed me to my kennel--without a word...Yep--I've done it now!  She isn't happy about all of this and she's mumblin under her breath!  And if Mamaw's not happy...ain't nobody happy...

December 6, 2010

Things are not getting off to a very good start again today!  Bob called--they want to deliver the double-window between the hours of 8-12 and then he wants to come by and make sure the window measurements are right.  We waited--and waited--and waited somemore...at 1:00 Bob rang the doorbell and Mamaw had to tell him the window wasn't here yet!  I immediately went to my kennel cause I thought they were BOTH GOING TO BLOW UP right there.

Bob said he was goin outside to do some paperwork in his pickup and wait for the delivery.  Frankly, Mamaw and I think he is very, very mad too!  Finally it got delivered; Bob measured and said he needed to go saw a piece yet and then Mamaw could paint.  What do ya mean she could paint?  She hasn't been able to leave the house to go get the paint yet!  At 3:00 p.m. she was gettin around to go get the paint.  AT LAST!!!!

She did a couple other errands along the way and came home with, you guessed it, WESTCOVE TAN PAINT--2 quarts of it.  Tomorrow she'll paint...

Poppy got home and heard the whole story from Mamaw--step by step.  He's smart enough to keep his mouth shut...me too.

Frustrating day for Mamaw--she's pretty quiet--and goin to bed early.  I won't say another word...

December 5, 2010

It's Sunday--we have a BIG NEWSPAPER today!  We couldn't get out the door first thing before Mamaw picked it up.  She says its all about Christmas and greed.  The stores need to make some money so they can stay in business.  And people want to buy these big gifts cause they think that's how they show their love.  Mamaw doesn't agree...nope; she says Christmas is all about JESUS!

We have just a little Christmas tree sitting outside our front door, facing 50th St. cause the big apartment house next door has a bunch of kids in it and she wants those kids to be able to enjoy the lights.  She puts em on before dark and leaves em runnin until morning.  I asked her if she thought we could afford that?

Then she put a hanging silver wreath that is really pretty out.  We have a bench on the deck so she put some Boyd's Bears on that too.  I'm afraid they'll get "spoiled" with the snow and all but she said, "Miss Scarlett, they are to ENJOY!  Let's all do that.  If the weather gets nasty, I can bring them in for a bit."

December 4, 2010

I think it was Forrest Gump who said, "Life is just a bowl of cherries" wasn't it?  There are still some of those crab apples outside that have dried up and when I can 'sneak' one by Mamaw, I drag it in the house.  Course she really doesn't want me to have them so I do it to her on purpose!  I get a payoff which I look forward to.  She goes to my "snaps" box and gets a treat and then she thinks she is "training me" to leave it for the treat.  Little does she realize that I'm one step ahead of her...there is a purpose in my behavior.  I'm smart though to let her think what she wants.  It doesn't hurt anybody that way.

The lumber yard was supposed to deliver our new window between 8-12 noon today so Mamaw jumped out of bed and moved all the plants away from that big sliding door down in the basement.  And then she got newspapers to put on the floor where she and Poppy decided they would have em put the window.  She's all ready for them....

BUT WAIT!  NOON PASSES BY AND NO DELIVERY! Okay, so what now?  I asked her if we were gonna wait all day...she said we'll wait until 3:00 p.m.  3:00 PM PASSES AND NO DELIVERY! This is gettin serious now...she called her repairman--no answer--left a message...the rest of the afternoon was pretty well shot.  I stayed out of the way I can tell ya!

December 3, 2010

There are big snowflakes in the air...Mamaw about went ballistic!  She says its not the snow--it's the wind!  We know it interferes with her walk.

Yep, she left me like an old shoe and went for her walk.  When she got back she told Poppy she "always feels better."  Me; unless its WARM I don't want any part of it.  It's hard enough to go out in the wind and try to get my business done for heaven's sake.

Poppy is watchin that Tiger Woods guy today on the Golf Channel.  He told Mamaw "Tigger" is doin real good and they are both happy about that.

It is the Lettermen tonight!  Mamaw and Poppy grew up hearing their songs...and they love it that they can understand every word they sing.  They performed songs such as: When I Fall In Love (1962), Goin Out Of My Head, Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You and Graduation Day.  Happy memories...

I got to go to the waterbed for a while and "snuggle" but then I felt Mamaw pick me up, kiss me goodnight and put me in my kennel.  Happy dreams Mamaw and Poppy.

December 2, 2010

Poppy is takin medicine for his cold--Mamaw is takin medicine to stop the "poops."  I'm trying to stay out of the way--if somebody isn't runnin for the bathroom they're runnin for a hankie!  And winter has just begun...and this is what we have to look forward to?  Poppy told Mamaw they lied to us about our GOLDEN YEARS...he asks what is golden about em.  I'm tryin to tell em it's all a matter of attitude--they don't want to hear that right now.

The sun came out and it was gorgeous.  I finally let Mamaw know I was up for a nice walk.  She got duded up in her coat and new hat, scarf and mittens (don't forget the "poop" bag) and away we went.  I loved gettin to smell the smells again...Ozzie is back!  We got on the trail and walked a mile--not fast like Mamaw wants to go--but slow; so I could smell.  I looked up at her and said, "Mamaw, this is now the walk should be; enjoyment all the way"!  She didn't disagree with me either.

December 1, 2010 (9th Anniversary)

Oh my gosh--the beginning of a new month already!  Mamaw was barely out of bed when Poppy handed her a card--with them dancin on the front of the card. Now--that made her day!  When she read the card, Poppy said "happily married for 8 years.  Mamaw reminded him it was NINE and they both laughed.  She is so sentimental...and Poppy is smart enough to know that.

Then the doorbell rang and HOLY COW--more roses! Yep, it's their 9th anniversary...(smile) They are gorgeous AGAIN!  She thinks he almost walks on water...go figure.

And then Poppy is off to work with his lunch.  Around noon here he came with a runny nose!  Oh Poppy...you've got a cold!  So, it's their anniversary--Poppy has a cold and Mamaw has "the scoots."  Bad timing...I might even be temped to say, "It's been a shitty day around here."

But Mamaw doesn't like to give up.  (I did talk her into a little nap the middle of the afternoon) but other than that, she's been clickin, clickin, clickin on the computer keyboard.  I asked her what she's doin and she says, "Miss Scarlett--I want to get some things done around here and there just isn't enough time to do it all."  RELAX MAMAW--there'll be another day and if not--WHO CARES?

November 30, 2010

When I stuck my nose outside this morning, there was a little bit of snow on the deck and as Mamaw and I wandered around, there was some blowing around in the air.  She said it's about that time...she doesn't like it!  We spend less and less time outside.  If she wants to walk, she goes to the Mall.  She shared her secret with me though--it's tempting to buy something so she doesn't go every day.

Mamaw has so much editing and work to do on her novel that she pretty much just stuck to that today.  It was time for the white clothes to be washed so I helped her with that.  She looked at the Christmas tree while we were in the basement but she didn't seem to want to bother with it so we just left it there.

We did get a nap...Mamaw has been really tired with all the deaths this month.  She's overhauled her sister, Pat's obituary cause it wasn't ever brought up to date.  She wants all her family to have a copy of that.

A boring day really--but one thing for sure.  The house was warm!  We waited for our Poppy to come home to be with us.  And Mamaw fixed a very nice chicken fettucine dinner for them.  I could smell it real good but I didn't get any...

Later in the evening I began "begging" her to go to the waterbed--she couldn't resist me!  Night all...

November 29, 2010

It's a BIG DAY today--Cully's funeral.  Poppy had to run out and get a haircut and when he came home he showed Mamaw this yellow argyle sweater he bought and asked her if she liked it.  (Of course she liked it--she tried to talk him into buying it earlier and he didn't)  He sure made her day with that!

The sun comes and goes and Mamaw told Poppy she was hopin for 'no rain' at least until Cully was lowered into the ground.  She got her wish.  She said it rained 'cats and dogs' and Poppy had to let her out at the church door but then it cleared when they left for the cemetery.

I couldn't go on the drive with them cause they drove down to Mount Ayr, IA where he wanted to be buried.  I'm sure they got to talk about a lot of things on the way though as they usually do.  When they got home, it was dark--and I was glad to see em.  "I shared with ya Cully--without complaint."

November 28, 2010

Poppy is goin to work!  Wish he could stay home with me...Mamaw is goin to get some work done around here--most of it outside and I don't want to go out with her!  She's gotta get the Thanksgiving pumpkins put away and make sure the eve spouts are free of leaves.  I think she's a workaholic but I'm not sure--I'm gonna keep a good eye on her though!

Before Poppy left for work they talked about Cullen's Visitation this afternoon.  Mamaw says she'll go a little earlier and he can stop by after he's done lookin at all those "eyes."

So we just sort of played around at gettin work done.  The sheets got their weekly "bath" and the vacuum ran.  She did finally sit down and look at the Sunday paper and saw Cully's obituary.  She's gettin dressed up right now to go to the visitation and knows that Becky is next door but she doesn't want to intrude so she's stayin put.

November 27, 2010

Mamaw and me were tired yesterday!  she thinks she ate something that didn’t agree with her when they went out to dinner with Regina and family.  I wasn't in the mood for a walk or nothin--just kinda laid around and watched her get some work done.  But Poppy was up and off to work...

Mamaw had so many phone calls she didn't get much else done though.  With three deaths in November she's got people callin...she never rushes them.  Then her friend, Lin called and they gabbed quite a whole about this gal Mamaw met on facebook who called in the morning.  That was a really nice talk they had too.

She did manage to sweep that danged garage again (like it's part of the house or something.)  And when she does the little odds and ends it seems to take her all day.  Well I watched her update photos of the grand kids and she fiddled and fiddled till they were just RIGHT!  Tickles me--but probably would frustrate Poppy.

November 26, 2010

Oh man, the girls were gone when Tess and I got up this morning. Wonder if they’ve been out all night for this crazy Thursday or Thanksgiving shopping day or whatever they decided to call it. Goofy times for each store to open so they gotta get their thoughts together on paper so they know where to go first. And the phone rang about 8:00 a.m. and Deb says they are standing in line at Gordman’s—it was gonna take 45 minutes to an hour. Mamaw said, “Miss Scarlett, I’m sure glad I didn’t go with em!”

She was kinda worried about getting to of us girls out to do our duty at the same time so would you believe
it—SHE TOOK TESS FIRST! Now, how do you like those apples huh? But she came and got me just right away when she was done with Tess and took me. She fed Tess first and I was about to blow my stack!!! She said, “Scarlett—have I taught you nothing at all? Guests are first.” Oh—forgot in my moment of jealousy. “Gotcha Mamaw—I’ll remember next time.”

November 25, 2010 (Thanksgiving)

Hey world--this is my second Thanksgiving on this earth--they were very different.  Last year Mamaw cooked for Reggie and family--this year Poppy said we'll take whoever shows up to Ryan's for turkey.  She got on the phone and called everybody she knows who lost a loved one this past year and wished them happiness and checked to make sure they wouldn't be ALONE.

Then Deb came and brought Tess with her.  Tess is kinda chubby and likes to hog Mamaw's attention too.  She kinda intimidates me just a little and I don't know why.  We managed to get along pretty well though until just before Hayleigh walked in the door.  Tess growled at me; and she had to go to her bed for "timeout."

Dinner was lovely and Deb had to change clothes and go to work but when she got off, she came back to our house and they plotted a shopping Black Friday thing. Mamaw told em just to go ahead--she didn't want to fight the crowds and she didn't need anything either.

We went to bed so we don't know what time they got out and around. I just hope they don't spend all of their money in one place...

November 24, 2010

The weather is FRIGHTFUL!  It's all over the news about the streets getting slick and all of the accidents.  And Mamaw had made plans to go out.  She needs Poppy to look at her "eyes" again cause she still isn't seein very good.  Well, at noon there was no way she was goin to go out so she called Poppy to cancel her eye appointment.  We're in like flynn...

I hate to even go out to do my "chores"--it is rainy, slushy and WINDY!  It's hard to poop when you think your ears might fly off so I'm stayin in as much as I can too.  I'll rest and Mamaw will work on her novel.

And we washed towels--and picked up all the plants she's got on the floor--TESS IS COMING TOMORROW FOR THANKSGIVING.  Yep, and Deb too.  Well they are gonna stay overnight for that crazy Black Friday or whatever it is so she wants the basement to be "dog proofed."  But Mamaw says they are doin something even more different than that this year--some of the stores are gonna open up on turkey day so Deb just may shop all night.  Hayleigh is with her dad right now but she's comin tommorow evening too.  I think we might have a girls slumber party--been a long time huh Mamaw?

November 23, 2010

It is colder today and Mamaw doesn't like it.  I like it lots better than that HOT stuff!  But she doesn't want to hang around outside as long as I do--gotta get her goin on her walks again so she'll be used to it.

Mamaw looks all dressed up and smells good--Poppy looks all dressed up and smell good too--wonder what's up?  And am I included?  Turns out Poppy is goin to the nursing home to visit his Mom and go on to see family and friends--I don't get to go with him.  But Mamaw is going down to Cummings about her Holly plant clippings she's callin "Patricia" and she said I could go.  Well, alright--get my leashed up, start the car and let's go!  It was just a wonderful ride with her.  She strokes me as she drives and then puts her hand down on the seat and I put my chin on her hand...warm and fuzzy.  Okay...done with that.  She drove right back to our house and we got in the house; she stayed for a little while and then had the nerve to shove my butt in the kennel and said, "Miss Scarlett, I'm goin to the Perry Tea Room to meet up with sister Mary for lunch.  We're gonna celebrate our Christmas together just in case the weather would turn bad and we wouldn't be able to get together."

November 22, 2010

But this morning when we got up, Mamaw had gone to her waterbed and sometime in the night Ozzie came in and flopped down beside Poppy. That means he's been here all night. And so who gets to go outside first this morning? Well—it wasn’t me! I had to HOLD MYSELF until she got done talking to him and walkin him down to the corner and around the bend on the trail so he could poop—not once—but twice! And then Finally—my turn…just in the nick of time too!

Ozzie is feelin really bad and we can’t help him with it. He wants to sleep against any wall he can get next to and really doesn’t want to be bothered. Sometimes he’ll come to Mamaw and put his head on her knee and she rubs his head and tells him he’s a good boy. We’re sad for him. But Mamaw said, “Now Scarlett—it won’t do us any good to bother him and that’s just what we would be doin.”

November 21, 2010

Mamaw says life is all about changes.  Wonder what she means?  Well-guess WE FOUND OUT!  Dodi came down to help Mamaw with her IPod--got so much new music on that thing she'll go for a walk and never come home...then she took her to lunch and they had a long talk.  I don't think she wanted me to hear what's goin on in people's lives!

She came back and Dodi left.  My Mamaw got on the laptop and started in...I just rested.  And it's a good thing too!  And a good thing they ate dinner right after Poppy got home from work!  The phone rang and it was Becky.  Oh my God--an ambulance is coming to take Cully to the ER!!!!  I heard her say, "Of course--I'll be right over."  I KNEW...Now don't get me wrong, I just love that boy but when he comes to my house, he tries to "steal" Mamaw away from me with his affection.  I gotta work so hard to hang right in there without bein "nasty" to him.

So now with two of us, she is inside, outside, filling food dishes, filling water dishes, tryin to be fair with her love--and really feeling crappy for poor Ozzie.  He wants to go home...Mamaw asked Poppy to go to the waterbed and let her have the recliner to sleep on.  She put Ozzie's HUGE PILLOW on the floor and put me in the kennel and she laid down with a throw over her.  FINALLY Ozzie was able to settle down and sleep.  Wonder how long he's stayin this time?

November 20, 2010

Well good mornin Mamaw—did you sleep good last night? Poppy asked her the same question. Still got that ole snotty nose and needs to dress warmer when she takes me out to “go.” I like the weather much better now that it is cooler but she’s got a problem with it.

We’ve done my tricks—got Poppy’s lunch packed—got him off to work—now what? “I’m not up to runnin any races today,” Mamaw told me so guess we’ll just go with the flow and just see what happens next.

She got to work and did some stuff she just couldn’t stand anymore and then she sat down with a cup of hot tea and read the paper. The phone rang and she answered—her friends’ son, Ronnie has passed away. No other details—don’t know when or any funeral arrangement plans but we know he died of cancer. Mamaw cried a while about that too…I just snuggled as close as I could get to her so she’d know how much I care for her. There have just been too many losses for her to cope with and she’s on hurtin status.

November 19, 2010

Mamaw got her Rainbow sweeper fixed that she thinks she can't live without.  She hasn't used it yet--that nasty cold is still hauntin her.  I've not seen her so lethargic before but Poppy is home so I'll hang with him!  And you know what?  She didn't even go outside the door other than to take me out to do my duty.

Her laptop is pretty busy today--don't know what she's up to for sure.  She isn't sharin but I bet you the wheels are rollin, rollin, rollin.  And she finished reading Katie Up and Down the Hall  by Glenn Plaskin.  The story is about a cocker spaniel who turned five neighbors into a family.  She laughed a lot during most of the book and then Poppy and I could see tears rolling down her cheeks and she didn't read near as fast as usual.  I asked her, "Mamaw, why you cryin so much"?  She told me that Katie died and then after Katie died, Pa-Re-El (Pearl) just gave up--course Mamaw says she was very old in body but very young in spirit.  Such a touching story--and well--it was the cocker spaniel angle that got to her. The author just made them "come to life" for her.  She says she highly recommends the book--so go out and get it humans!

November 18, 2010

Poppy is home! Oops—he and Mamaw are goin to take Miss Betty out for lunch cause she’s movin back to Denison. They “herded me” into the kennel and went to run a couple of errands and went to lunch on the East side of Des Moines. They both said it was very good and came highly recommended by Vicki. They went back to Vicki’s house to see all the work she has done to sell their house…yep; they are gonna move too—in January to a new house in Ankeny. I told ya—everybody’s movin on up! I’m sure glad Mamaw and Poppy are stayin put with me!!!

They got back and Mamaw began packing the car with errands she’s gonna do on her own. Poppy is stayin with me—that probably means a nap and some lovin…

November 17, 2010

Alrighty people—we are exhausted from our trip…it’s so good to be home. Poppy had to work but Mamaw doesn’t want to get out of bed. She did finally cause I simply would not go outside to poop for Poppy—that’s HER JOB!

Needless to say, we did little today. She worked and worked on the blog and unloaded pictures taken on the Notre Dame Campus and the Air Zoo—which we will share with you later. It takes a long time to put them in “her special program” to crop, name and save them. And she worked without complaining.

We did sneak in a “middle of the afternoon nap.” I sure needed that I can tell ya! And then it was time to vacuum and get some other stuff done. And she has a terrific headache today—sort of grumpy.

November 16, 2010

Mamaw’s got plans today! All duded up with all kinds of Sunday paper ads and another BIG BAG she’s shovin me in the kennel. I understand though—she told me she has to get all of this “stuff” that was left in Michigan to their owners before bad weather sets in. She met a very nice, young man for lunch at Panera in Ames and they had a wonderful visit. She congratulated him on his job at the Fareway Warehouse and told him to stay out of trouble cause that could be a long career for him—with wonderful benefits. She warned him though, not to even take a plastic fork from the place cause they are VERY fussy.

Then she went to Bio-Life to see Dodi—and for the second time she stopped in, she found out that she had the day off. So she drove to Nevada to see her for a while and when she came home, I could smell Max on her pants. I wish I could have gone along to play with him but ya know about that stupid rule—dogs can’t go in places that serve food. And Mamaw doesn’t like to leave me locked in the car alone.

I think her vacation is beginnin to catch up with her big time! But she still took the time to make a couple of contacts in reference to a fundraiser for the son of a long-time friend who is battling cancer. She’s always good about tryin to donate things and always has good ideas about raffles and stuff.

November 15, 2010

Dorothy was so right!—There is no place like home! Mamaw read the story to me and I can tell ya, she is so right about it all. (Dorothy Gale is swept away to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home).

The trip was just wonderful…did ya hear me? JUST WONDERFUL and Mamaw would say TOO SHORT TOO! But ya know, it takes a toll on ya. Mamaw had hoped to stay in bed for the day “nursin” her cold but instead had to be up and around cause “the window man” came. Poppy fixed a ham and grilled cheese sandwich for them before THE MAN came and she got her cup of hot tea too!

Poppy and me—we were smart though. We shut ourselves up in the office and let Mamaw take care of it! So she got all three loads of the laundry done so I guess we’re sorta back to normal. As soon as the man was done, I was back in my kennel and pretty much spent the day there.

November 14, 2010

Mamaw is up—Oh, Oh—this isn’t good! The cold has her…no church today—sorry—I want to load up and head home so I can “get under the porch.” Alright—let’s get movin then! Poppy did most of the packin up but Mamaw felt responsible for the potted plants she put together so she helped. I was underfoot so bad she put me in the backseat—guess that means I’m not ridin on her lap for a ways. But—it means they aren’t gonna forget to take me home with them!

Kim was a real sweetheart and fixed Mamaw a big, huge container of hot lemon tea and sent another bag along with her. We’re in the car and off we go. Kim has her own problems—people who are supposed to be at the church doin their jobs DIDN’T SHOW UP TODAY and alarms are goin off everywhere…poor Kim.

November 13, 2010

Today is the BIG DAY! Poppy went out for a ride early this morning and picked up some donuts and got gas. Mamaw is the next one up…gotta get ready to go to South Bend, Indiana! Jonn crawls out next…happy to see the donuts too! Then Dan and Kim come out of their bedroom looking like its way too early for them. Donuts were had by all—well; except for Isaiah and me that is…They looked like they were enjoyin em.

They got so much stuff in their arms I can’t imagine them needin all of that stuff—but maybe. It’s supposed to rain today (not what they wanted to hear on “game day.”) I don’t have to go in the kennel when they leave though cause Jonn is gonna be here for most of the day. I still prefer to stay in the back bedroom…and wait for them.

The middle of the afternoon, Jonn took me outside to go potty cause he’s gotta get to the church. I’m in the kennel…waitin. It was very dark when they got home. And I could smell something really, really good. Aw—pizza—Dan’s favorite pizza. They pigged out and talked about the wonderful game. Notre Dame beat Utah—28 to 3—they couldn’t be happier. And just to top the day off, they all had cake again.

November 12, 2010

I got lucky today—I think they are too tired to do too much so we’re gonna spend some time with Dan cause he took the day off from work. They gotta run lots of errands cause tomorrow is the “BIG GAME” and they’re goin back to Notre Dame for that! I didn’t ride along for all of that cause Mamaw is gonna be in and out of the car a lot.

She had to go to the Mall to get a new battery for James’ birthday watch. And she wanted to get a birthday cake and ice cream for after dinner tonight. His birthday is already over but WE didn’t get to celebrate with him so we’re gonna do it now! And she found a pair of glass frames “she can’t live without” so she has to pick them up too.

November 11, 2010

It is Thursday already—we just can’t believe it! Poppy and Mamaw got up too early to suit me I can tell ya. My instincts are telling me though that we’re goin someplace. Mamaw is fixin her hair and putting makeup on and Poppy has shaved and changed into some nice clothes. If the bus is goin—I want to be on it! When they were ready to leave, I was ready too. Oops! “Miss Scarlett, you can’t go cause we’ll be eating at some restaurant Poppy wants to take me to and you know the LAW says you can’t go in,” she said. Oh crap—who made up that lousy law anyway? “Well, where ARE YA GOIN,” I asked her—she said “Notre Dame.” In the kennel I go—and not willingly I might add! I heard the engine in the Lexus start and they pulled out of the driveway.

November 10, 2010

Mamaw is fussin about not havin enough time in Michigan—with the family. Well, get around then and get to doin what ya want to do! When she got up this morning, Poppy was off on another one of his rides. He’s checkin out the country. And Mamaw slept LATE—9:00 a.m. I thought my sides were gonna burst but I made it out just in the nick of time. I had no time to sniff and check out the area I would use so I had to trust that it was for me—and it was safe.

Kim and Jonn were long gone by that time and Dan was doin his “morning reading.” Mamaw and I know better than to interrupt that. Well Poppy came home and said he’s been around different areas of Kalamazoo. They visited and tried to get the laptop on the wireless internet but that didn’t work so they decided just to start out the day. At 2:00 p.m. or so, Dan would have to get Jonn from school and bring him home so they shoved me in the kennel and asked Mr. Isaiah to go back and stay with me to keep me company.

Dan got the 1998 RED, MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE out of the garage and away they went. I said, “For heaven’s sake Isaiah—couldn’t they take us along too”? Isaiah told me there wasn’t enough room. He told me that HE can’t even ride in the back seat cause he’s too big! Oh my—must not be anything like Poppy’s Lexus!

November 9, 2010

Woke up in a strange house today—on the lake! Nice—but different. I don’t know what to do so Mamaw is patient with me…We aren’t in any hurry to get around today cause we’re on vacation. But we do get around finally, and start our day. Dan took them on a BIG ride and they went to the store to get some food. (Don’t worry she brought plenty of treats and food for me. She even brought bottled water in hopes my tummy wouldn’t get upset. But my tummy is a little upset—guess it was the long drive. Mamaw wants me to eat but I’m just gonna fast for a while cause I don’t want to throw up in their house.

Then we got home and Mamaw started raking leaves—they are huge!!! She said she’d get her exercise that way today so she raked and raked and really seemed to enjoy it. Dan and Poppy thought she was CRAZY of course, who would enjoy raking leaves anyhow? She picked em up in a really big thing that had wheels and hauled em over to the place Dan can burn them. She did good. Poppy said, “You’re gonna be on hurtin status tomorrow and you’ll be complainin.” She said, “I promise not to complain.” Poppy and Dan laughed. (I did too but I didn’t want to offend Mamaw so I had to kinda try to hide it.”

November 8, 2010

Early to bed; early to rise! And that we did—Poppy wants to be “on the road again” by 8:00 a.m. They haven’t shared that with me yet but there’s a change in their behavior. That means I gotta get around and get “my business done” so we can go. He’s gonna run over to the gas station and get gas (and a newspaper for Mamaw.) So she’s FINALLY gonna pack my bag. And guess what? I get TWO this time!!!! I have a hunch our ride is gonna be longer than it’s ever been before!!!

I’m sittin on Mamaw’s lap and we’re pullin out of the driveway—the car is packed FULL; maybe we’re gonna stay there for a long time. I’ve got some doubts to contend with about this trip. Ya know I’m kinda “skiddish” and I depend on Mamaw or Poppy to let me know what’s happenin. I hope they don’t get so busy they forget about me and leave me hangin…

We drive a long way before we stop—that’s okay cause I’m “trained” to hold my business when necessary. The trees have lots of leaves on them but Mamaw tells Poppy they really aren’t pretty at all. And they talk about the traffic starting out and how it’s not heavy at all. They just visit back and forth—I think it’s gonna be a good day!

November 7, 2010

What a lovely day it is outside—I don’t know how warm it is but I can tell ya, Mamaw said it was BEAUTIFUL! I took her word for it. I’ve been out a couple of times already, getting my plumbing cleaned out for my bath. Mamaw is busy putting the towels all over the living room rug and bathroom floor. Then she goes to the kitchen to get my “special” shampoo. I already KNEW it was bath day with all of that—even before she took my collar off.

She grabs me and away I go like a bunch of leaves blowin in the wind. I’m in the bathtub before you can say, Jack Frost, and the water is runnin. Mamaw puts her hand under the water and gets it just the right temperature and we proceed. She wets me all down and then puts that smellin stuff on me. Then she rubs back and forth till I am just in heaven—did ya hear me? I’m just in heaven! She says “sweet nothins” in my ear all of the time reassuring me we are havin a good time. And then it’s rinse time…that feels wonderful too after my body massage. I tell ya people, if ya want a good body massage—Mamaw is the one to do it!

She wraps this HUGE towel around me and lifts me from the tub. Rub-a-dub-dub she runs that towel back and forth and back and forth and grabs my feet one at a time and rubs them too. She takes the towel and squeezes my ears! Not hard though—just to get some of the drippy water off me.

November 6, 2010

We got Poppy’s lunch around for him and Mamaw started HER CAR TOO! Now what’s goin on? “We got all kinds of work to do today,” she informs me. “But first, let’s get these leaves over to the disposal place.” She let me ride along… And trust me—I was good! Then we went for a ride and I loved that too.

We got back and she went outside to get the last of the outside stuff in the basement for winter. And then she started MORE laundry! My God—how many outfits do they wear a day anyway? She’s been countin pills and getting stuff rounded up—and then I’m in the kennel.

She came back with a Trader Joe’s bag—yep, she couldn’t stand it! Just had to go see what the new store in West Des Moines was like—and she said she liked it. She’s gonna have to eat in the car or a rest stop area on our way to Michigan, so she picked up some bread, peanut butter, crackers and a Cobb salad. Poppy will just have to go eat alone…I can’t go in where they serve food. Mamaw says that’s just okay—we’ll manage. Guess my brown eyes got to her cause I’m gonna be saved from EXILE this time.

November 5, 2010

We’re still workin real hard to get ready to leave on our trip. Mamaw got the rest of her outside decorations in the basement. She said she’s gonna leave the two wooden pumpkins out and hopes nobody takes them. She picked up some more leaves that furrowed into a circle on the lower deck and loaded all her bags in the car. Tomorrow is disposal day.

She got a call from her sister, Pat, in Texas and while on the phone she began to cry. Pat told her that she is terminal with gangrene. She’s had years of sores that wouldn’t heal and Mamaw always thought it was diabetes but no—gangrene. The doctor’s want to remove her leg but she said, “no way” to that. They talked a long time and Mamaw cried a long time too.

November 4, 2010

The house is busy today! Poppy runnin errands and Mamaw tryin to get stuff done for our trip. More laundry—how does she do that?

She had to run to Hancock Fabrics to find buttons for Poppy’s REALLY HEAVY COAT to wear to the Notre Dame game. I asked her what I was gonna wear to stay warm and she told me I don’t get to go. Well, and what else is new???

No Ozzie today. I can tell ya I’m relieved. He just came into our house and took Mamaw away from me. He is demanding, wanting her to pet him all the time or give him my SNAP treats. So it’s gonna be good to get back to normal and just lie around watchin her do her work.

November 3, 2010

Good thing Mamaw was up early today. Jean brought Ozzie back cause she has to go home and get ready for work. Oh, oh – Mamaw wasn’t expectin that! Now what? She has a hair appointment at 8:30 and Poppy has to go to work. She shifted gears real, real fast—never seen anything like it really. Now am I gonna have to put up with HIM all day, “hoggin” my Mamaw?

She’s smart though—Becky told her where to find the key but Jean said it wasn’t there. She ran next door and finally found it so she came back to our house and got Ozzie. She took him to his house (where his food and water is) and will check on him after her hair is done. One of Cully’s friends is supposed to “dog sit” today so we’ll keep and eye out and make sure he gets taken care of. After all, Mamaw says if that was her in the hospital, she’d want somebody takin good care of me. Maybe I better not complain???

Home from her hair and she didn’t even let me out of the kennel but got on the phone to BELKIN. She couldn’t understand the guy (from India) but just kept asking him to repeat himself. Finally, the guy decided it was a defective router. Still in the kennel, she boxes it up and off she goes again! She returned it to the store and went to Best Buys to get the Netgear like they had last time. She called Mark—he’ll be back later today. We’ll see…she’s very frustrated I CAN TELL YOU THAT!

November 2, 2010

Mamaw has been out huntin for new buttons for Poppy’s big winter coat. He’s gonna take that with us to Michigan to wear at the Notre Dame Football game. I asked why they would want to sit out and BE COLD just to watch the game when they could be warm and watch the TV. Mamaw said, “Miss Scarlett, there are just some things on my “bucket list” I want to fulfill. Whatever… Mission accomplished—she came home with the coat and the buttons looking pretty pleased with herself.

Just inside the door really, the phone rang. It was Becky—EMERGENCY! Yes, Cully is very sick and must go to the doctor, could Ozzie come to our house. Mamaw ran right over there and brought him back. It was okay for a while but then I could see he was demanding lots of attention from her and I got a little jealous. Well, good God—I’m here too—and I want part of her. He wanted my little chew thingy but she managed to take that from him. And he goes to the kitchen—he wants some of my snaps. She gave him 4 and I only got 1! Is that fair???

They had a terrible time getting Cully in the car but then off they went. I guess they’re gonna put him in the hospital and run some tests. Mamaw said they should have called the ambulance to come get him.

November 1, 2010

The weather is cooling down now and I’ve heard people saying the snow could be flying anytime now. But what a terrific October we have had! Mamaw and I just are not going to complain about that at all!

Poppy is home—it’s so nice to have a little more time with him. Gosh, there for a while he was working so much we missed him—Mamaw and me. So I will spend time with him today cause Mamaw came out of the bedroom lookin pretty darned good to be just stayin home today.

She’s got lots of “stuff” to do though before this trip we’re goin on. She went outside and gathered some more leaves in bags. She’s haulin her “outside stuff” inside for winter but she left the little tricycle out there until just before we leave. When she came haulin in the scarecrow it scared me a little but they went down to the basement and when she came back up, she had left that thing down there and brought up a wreath to hang outside the front door.

October 31, 2010 (Halloween)

I am 14 months old today. So I’ve been reflecting back on my life. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve been lots of places. I’ve had good food and care and even met my REAL Mama. I’ve been blessed! Not sure I would change a thing…

Poppy has to work—Mamaw has to go lookin for some cords for him. It’s gonna be COLD out there in Michigan! I asked her if I needed a coat and gloves and she said nature takes care of that. I was kinda hopin for a cute, sexy little coat and some of those pink snow boots I saw last time at PetSmart but Poppy says, NO WAY! Guess that settled that!

Don't let the "gouls" get ya Ozzie
It is Halloween—when Ozzie came out to go potty, we ran out to see him—me carryin his edible card. I just love that guy; don’t ya know?

And Mamaw is cookin up a storm today. More chili (but for her this time)—Poppy won’t eat it. And she’s cookin steak to put noodles in and then she adds mushrooms and sour cream—she calls it some kind of Stroganoff. Then she made Poppy some corn bread—he LOVES THAT STUFF. He puts warm syrup over it with butter and eats it right up! Good meal—no treats. I tried so hard to get my teeth on some of that Stroganoff but they finally made me get down.

I didn’t make it to the waterbed tonight. Mamaw was in the middle of a movie and wouldn’t take me back so in the end you know where I ended up, don’t you?

October 30, 2010 (Trick or Treat)

Mamaw says we gotta get around and get stuff done now—we’re leavin for Michigan November 8th. And you know her—everything will have to be “spit shined” before we go.

It is definitely laundry day around here—up, down and all around till I gotta have a nap. Helpin Mamaw with the laundry is exhausting! But on top of that, she’s pickin up leaves and putting em in bags! I said, “No thanks—I’ve had enough.”

Then she gets in the car and takes off—leavin me to fend for myself (in the kennel)—she rarely allows me to stay alone in the house where I JUST MIGHT to some damage. She’s searchin for pants for Poppy, and she had to get her anniversary ring checked. I ate a little bit of each of her nightgowns so now she thinks she needs something NEW to wear at night on our vacation.

October 29, 2010

We are all just exhausted from our trip yesterday…hope nobody calls, rings the bell, or wants ANYTHING…we need quiet time.

Mamaw did have to work very hard to get caught up on the blogs though. I hung right in there with her and tried to dictate as fast as I could so we could get done. It felt good when that was done.

Cully didn’t feel very good yesterday so Mamaw walked Ozzie again today. Ozzie had his surgery and now he is sore so she wouldn’t bring him in to see me cause I get so darned excited when I see “my man.” He didn’t want to go on his usual walk either so she was nice and just let HIM decide where to go and when he had had enough. She said we need to give him a couple days to recover a little bit.

October 28, 2010

Oh yeah—up early I guess! They were almost all ready to go when they got me up to go potty. They try to stay calm so I don’t get excited but I can tell ya, when Poppy gets his keys off the hook and Mamaw open my bag to check on “supplies”—I’M EXCITED!!! There is just nothing I like better with them than to get on Mamaw’s lap and ride, ride, ride. They visit and discuss stuff and she touches me and kisses my neck and oh God—it’s just delicious. And—it’s a long ride. Elvis Presley was signin his heart out this mornin. We stop along the way one time for me to relieve myself before we got to our destination.

The destination? A HUGE FUNERAL HOME for God’s sake. And they take me in there. Now I’m hopin they aren’t getting any ideas about putting me in one of those casket things and closing the lid on me. I don’t mind the cover-up at night when it is bedtime but I am not going to stand still for THAT! We looked around and found out the stuff Poppy wanted to know and leave. I’m invited to relieve myself again and I really needed that—SCARED THE PEE RIGHT OUTA ME I tell ya.

October 27, 2010

Poppy’s home! I notice Mamaw doesn’t get involved in as much working around the house when he wants to rest. She’s spent time on her laptop writin that novel. She types, types, types and then sits back in the rocking chair to THINK. Poppy has always called her “The Thinker.” I rest with him to make sure he gets enough rest.

The window man came to take a look at ones we need to replace and those to repair. He’s gonna get an estimate around but when he said the two big ones in the living room have to be replaced, I could see Mamaw trying to count up the $$$$$$. The man is really nice and is working with them about trying to use some of the material from those to be replaced to use with the repair windows. Now—SHE LIKES THAT! She’s frugal you know. But she has her priorities too. Just depends what category it falls under. (smile)  Well, they talked about the windows and decided it’s just a wait and see—do what we can—don’t panic.

October 26, 2010

Poppy to work—Mamaw at work. She’s makin Chili for Becky and Cully. He’s got cancer ya know and is kinda stuck at home. Well, he has some energy but wants to use that goin out and havin a little fun. Mamaw thinks that’s great! She is still walking Ozzie and when she does she brings him in to see me. He has a routine at our house—in the door, hello to me, goes over to my toys (he took a big chew bone home one day but it was too big for me anyway, the straight to the kitchen for his SNAP treats. She gives him 3 (cause he’s BIG—and I get 1). That is if HE doesn’t take it from me…I guess when you are in love with somebody you learn to give a little.

There's my man Ozzie and Jessie
She’s been workin in the yard and the wind is awful! So all she really got done was spraying some outside plants and getting them arranged in the basement for winter. She’s got a place where they can get the sunlight in the morning so she’s hopin she’ll keep em healthy till spring.

He one plant she named Rita isn’t doin so good. She named the plant that in memory of her sister that passed away in December. That’s the one she really wants to keep goin.

I don’t like the wind! I don’t like goin out in the wind! I’m afraid my ears are gonna blow away like the leaves and it just scares me. So—no walks—no off leash work. Just outside to “snoop” a little and do my business.

Mamaw took a walk but just went a mile. She got home and said the wind was so strong when she walked into it that it nearly took her breath away. She’s not sure what she’s gonna do about getting her walking in either.

Winter is on the fringe—we don’t like it.

October 25, 2010

When Mamaw got up this morning, it was raining. Oh, oh—we have plans to travel. She thinks maybe she and I will just stay at home cause every time we are in and out of the car it means wiping feet. And even though we wipe feet they are still damp. Mamaw doesn’t want to get her clothes all dirty. Well, they discussed this for a while and decided to make the trip another day. Hope it isn’t raining then…

So it quickly became a very boring day. Everything Mamaw tried to do she got resistance. Not good…She persisted though and tried and tried. I was proud of her for not giving up. She literally spent the day in the office trying to play “catch up” on all of her stuff. Ya know—she spends more time organizing than anybody we know. Poppy just shakes his head and says, “Miss Scarlett—just leave her alone.”

October 24, 2010

Poppy asked Mamaw what was on her agenda today and she told him she had to be available for Mediacom from 10:00-1:00 for service. She made that “isn’t that ridiculous look” and that said it all. She has to baby-sit Mediacom!

He’s glad he has to go to work today and not deal with that. He asked for a blank check to HyVee and Mamaw didn’t ask what for. Well, that’s good cause we have a surprise comin for her later.

The morning we spent playing and waiting, and waiting and waiting. Mediacom called right at 1:00 and said they could come right then—she shoved me in the kennel. Two young men came and they got right to work. Mamaw liked that….and then she let me out of the kennel. They thought I was cute so I behaved. It didn’t take very long during the diagnostics when they had the problem diagnosed. The wireless router needs to be replaced. I got a couple pats on the head and they were gone.

October 23, 2010

The world looks pretty bleak for Mamaw right now. The Internet has been givin her problems and she can’t get my blogs posted—she’s frustrated! I heard her on the phone to Mediacom—they said, “Well, you could unplug the--blah, blah, blah--and take it to the office on Ingersoll and get a different one.”

She took a very deep breath and said, “You know, we pay you $$$ every month for our service. I’ve been to the Ingersoll office for 2 new Internet boxes and 3 new remote controls in the last year. I’m tired of doing all of the running. A repairman was just here 7-10 days ago and now today we have the same problem. I want somebody to come to our house and REALLY check things out. We are probably going to need a new modem.”

October 22, 2010

Mamaw had me up and out the door almost before I was awake this morning! Poppy is all dressed for playin golf and smellin real good I might add. He wants to spend some time with me before he leaves so I gotta get up! Besides that, Mamaw has to have some of my “poop” to take when we see Miss Jessica to get “winterized.” They check my poop once a year to make sure nothing grows in there that shouldn’t.

We see Poppy off in that Lexus of his and we start the laundry. Oh my God, there is tons of laundry today! And when I get naughty helping her? She won’t let me go downstairs with her so we’ll see how this battle goes.

October 21, 2010

It’s gonna be another beautiful day today! And Poppy is home! What more could I ask for? Well, how about them spending a little time with me huh? They got around and left me. Poppy said they had a number of errands to get done so he pushed me in my kennel. I’m gonna get even—somehow I’m gonna get even…

When Mamaw took me out later this morning, I refused to take a walk. That always just GETS HER GOAT! She just can’t understand why I don’t like walkin as much as she does. Well, again she’s mad at me. I’m just waitin for the axe to fall.

Oh good, they are leaving again. At least I feel safe in my kennel away from her when she is mad. She has a nasty demeanor about herself when she’s mad too—no attention. Listen—I mean no attention at all. It didn’t take em very long—Mamaw says they got “winterized.” I didn’t know what that meant but I wasn’t about to ask Mamaw so I asked Poppy and he said winterized means we got our flu shots. I guess I gotta go to see Jessica tomorrow and get my shots too.
We spent the afternoon veggin out -- me and Poppy. Mamaw went on her walk. The rest of our day was kinda boring…Mamaw has to watch “her faves” so I went back on the bed and was GOOD. I knew better than to try to yank her chain again today.

October 20, 2010

We fixed Poppy’s lunch and Mamaw dropped a couple of corn chips on the floor. I grab em up and eat em—they’re so good! I try to be right there when she puts that stuff together cause if she has an accident, I help her clean it up.

I’m in no mood to walk today so don’t mess with me. Our walk two days ago scared the hell out of me. We got up to the top of the trail and some kid fell off his skateboard and the noise was ever so loud. So I’m boycotting the walks again—I suppose we’ll continue trying until I get tired of it and just give in. She says she loves to watch me walk cause I’m so graceful.

October 19, 2010

Poppy woke up this morning and I was “glued to his leg.” Oh boy, poppy, we goofed! Mamaw is gonna be really mad at us for doin this AGAIN. I quick ran back to the waterbed and woke her up. I wanted to tell her the ugly truth before Poppy got the chance. I don’t want her to be mad at me—I didn’t do it! He came back too and spilled the ugly truth to her.

She said, “Oh, right, take a gal out and wine and dine her and come home and go to bed with another woman.” Poppy said, “Well, when I woke up I thought I recognized the ceiling—and the woman.” Me? I’m getting a kick out of all the teasing. Whew Poppy—we managed to come away from there unscathed.

October 18, 2010

Oh good, Poppy is home today! Seems like we always have so much to do though. I’m hopin for a ride…

Poppy does such a good job of runnin the errands for Mamaw while she writes our blog and does the housework. It’s definitely been a “hairy” day though. Some of the errands Poppy ran either didn’t get done or he got the wrong stuff so Mamaw says she’ll have “a re-do” tomorrow. And today I am feeling love, love, love for Poppy so I’m gonna hang with him today.

And if it don’t beat all! No ride for me but Poppy invites Mamaw out on a date for God’s sake. Now, what makes her so SPECIAL? They left early—Poppy said he’d buy her a glass of wine before the movie. Yeah, Mamaw has been wantin to see “Secretariat” so they’ve deserted me. When they came home Mamaw was tired—well Poppy too (think it was the wine and Scotch and water?) She told me to stay with Poppy so I did—well, she had to put the gate up but I KNEW what she meant.

In the night, here I was all cuddled up to Poppy on the recliner—just as close as I could get. He got up to go potty so I had to move over but when he came back, I curled myself around him again. And guess what? He didn’t make me go to my kennel—I slept all night with my Poppy. Did I mention I thought I’d died and gone to Heaven?

October 17, 2010

It’s pretty obvious Mamaw is “on the road again” today—she’s all duded up AGAIN! Oh yeah, she’s goin to Omaha with Dodi and Deb to Lynette’s 60th birthday party. She’s all excited about it—hasn’t seen her in years. She’s been real sick and her husband passed away in March. I can’t go…

They left before Poppy did so I got to stay out of the kennel a while longer. So I might as well not complain about things – just do as I’m told. Poppy will be the first one home today so I’ll be listenin for his car!

October 16, 2010

Mamaw got Poppy’s white hankies bleached again! I try to help her carry that stuff up and down the stairs to the basement—sometimes she appreciates it; other times she does not.

What a darned nice day it was to do “off leash” work on the trail. We don’t understand why there isn’t anything goin on up there but nobody so we worked, and worked. I love bein able to just go where the nose goes cause it knows where to go. On the leash sometimes it pulls my back and I don’t get to finish my nose job. But today—it was absolutely tremendous! And I met a collie dog that was more white than black—it was very interesting. His owner told us all about it.

October 15, 2010

She’s goin again today cause she’s all “duded up.” She ‘invited’ me to walk again today but I’m not takin any chances—she can just walk by herself. I’m still holdin a grudge from that gas station incident a few days ago!

Her high school classmate is havin a birthday so a surprise party has been planned for Jayne at The Diner. Yeah—they’re gonna eat and share cake—some good memories and maybe even some not so good but Mamaw says that all goes with it. The Diner is a really neat place she tells me but again, I can’t go, they serve food. I don’t know who ever made up that silly rule—it just doesn’t make sense to me!

Mamaw said they had a terrific time so I’m happy for her. She took more photos…

Jayne is sampling the cake

The rest of the day just sort of evaporated into evening. Jessie did stop by and bring the yummy yellow jeans back to Mamaw and she gave me the cut-off leg part cause I love, love, love it.

It was pizza for dinner and—I didn’t get any. I finally had to resort to going to my own dish of food cause I was hungry but they don’t give in to me. And then when Mamaw went to bed she told me to just stay with my Poppy for the evening and so—I just snuggled up to him and finally I got brave enough to ask, “What’s up with HER”? He said something about maybe she needs a little time to herself. Okay—have it your way (for now).

October 14, 2010

Thankfully we usually get a reprieve from over-stimulation after a day of mucho activity! I get to rest—however; I was invited to go on a walk but “no thanks.” After she almost dumped me out and left me at a strange gas station I’m not sure what she would do.

So she got duded up and went to Jessie’s house where they worked on shortening a pair of new yellow jeans Mamaw bought at a “going out of business” joint for $21.00. That’s why they are too long—she needs Petite but she said for the price she could have them shortened. I love, love, love the color of them too!

October 13, 2010 (Afternoon Surprise)

Aw yes—the SURPRISE! Mamaw grabs up “my bag” and Poppy jingles his keys—that means a trip. The Lexus—now I don’t mind the trips in that car—it rides like a dream. But we drive, and drive and drive and I think we’re never gonna get there. Stopped for gas once and Mamaw took me out to go potty. I didn’t want to go potty—it was a scary place and I was afraid they were just gonna dump me out. No way was I gonna let that happen to me. Now I know I can be a very bad girl sometimes but for God’s sake—don’t just dump me out someplace and leave me…and so we manage to get back on the road and drive and drive some more. Then we get to this little town (about 500 people) and they start looking for an address there. It was a lovely home and then I kinda worried they were gonna leave me THERE!

October 13, 2010

Ya just never know WHAT you’re gonna do from day to day with Mamaw and Poppy. Yesterday ya know, it was work, work, work all day. Today it’s runnin the errands in the morning and then…surprise, surprise, surprise.

I was invited to go for a car ride—and I was ready. I checked “my bag” and everything to make sure she had put all I would need in it. We slipped over to Urbandale and took pictures of the new bronze sculpture there, and emailed Urbandale, Clive and the Pappajohn Sculpture people that they should put together a brochure of all three sites. She said they should be available online and on-sight for people. Ya know, people really do come to Iowa!

October 12, 2010

Poppy doesn’t have to work today so he’s goin out of town today. Mamaw says she’s gonna stay home. I guess that means I’m stayin home too!

She reminds me we have lots to do today. She wants to get the sanding finished up before it’s too chilly for her to enjoy workin on it in the garage. She goes out and sits on her little “antique stool” and works it by hand now. Mamaw says she can’t use the sandin machine for this—the areas are too small. I suppose she’s gonna wake up tomorrow with sore fingers and elbow again!

October 11, 2010

Mamaw was sayin that some places won’t be open today and there will be no mail delivery. She complained about that a little saying that since the Post Office is so “broke” why do they get so much paid holiday time? How would I know that?

It was, without a doubt, a gorgeous day again! Poppy went off to work to try to earn a dollar so he can keep a dime after the Government is done with him. And Mamaw has committed to helping out with Ozzie two times today—Cully isn’t home and Becky will be working.

We sent for our walk and then she made me come in the house so I could take Ozzie to relieve himself. She’s happy I’m not jealous. Well, that’s because he always comes to the door and wants to come in. Mamaw has gotten in the habit of lettin him in and we touch noses. Then he goes straight to the kitchen and wants 3 Snap treats—I only get 1. After that he goes to my toy box and takes home what he wants. I had a great big bone and he grabbed it out and begged to take it home—he got it! Now how did he do that, I wonder? And at last, it is walk time. She’s just like an old mother hen with him and he loves her too!
