September 29, 2010 (Deb's BD - 29 AGAIN)

Mamaw got up this morning singing…happy birthday to Deb! I think she’s 29 again but I’ve learned not to ask a woman her age. And with that let’s just move on.

We worked hard this morning—I helped pull the sheets off the bed so we could wash em. I can’t do the pillowcases though. And I go straight to the basement with her to make sure EVERYTHING gets in the washer. Then we wait for the buzzer to tell us they are ready to put in the dryer. I’m the watch dog after all, so when I hear it I rush in to Mamaw to let her know I’m on duty! I nearly turn myself wrong-side out but she gets the message. And then it’s dryer time…same procedure…same affect. But then she shuts me out of the bedroom to make the bed. I do HATE THAT…but I sure like the way it looks when it’s all made nice and the pillows are on there and everything. My favorite pillow is “ALWAYS kiss me goodnight” and I make sure I do too.

September 28, 2010

Today is Miss Betty’s conference at skilled nursing so Mamaw was up and at it early getting ready. She made sure she took care of me and my needs but was out the door with any lovin. She said she was gonna curl her hair so she’s look and feel real pretty for this meeting. Poppy will be goin off to work too but I got to be out of the kennel till Poppy had to leave. At least when he put me in the kennel I didn’t feel like “I was in the slammer!

When she walked in the door later, she had Miss Betty’s laundry so I went straight to the basement and we worked on that right away. I’m hoping to get my mouth on a pair of her clean panties after they are washed and hanging over the bathtub. Just gotta have some patience is all.

September 27, 2010

Lord, another month almost gone. I’m grateful for the pretty weather at least in the afternoons though. Mamaw is draggin me in and out and all around. But first—she goes and does her thing. She was gone for hours (wish I could spy on her and see what she’s up to). Sure hope she’s stayin out of trouble with Poppy!

The word for the day is: I’m gonna give priority to sandin on my project. Well, she sure did! The first time out she made me go out on the cable while she worked. It was kinda nice though—Tim McGraw was blastin away with her favorite songs so she did “hand sanding” so she could hear him. (I really think she’s got an awful crush on him but I don’t want to tell Poppy cause I just don’t know what he’d think about that)—so I keep my mouth shut. She sanded till her thumb was killin her. Could she sit and rest a minute?

September 26, 2010

It’s Sunday—that’s always a hard day for Mamaw. In addition to that, she told Poppy she had a terrible night. Looks like today might just be a “bummer.” She was promised one of his great haircuts though so she got up and around. I love to chew on her clean hair as Poppy clips it and it falls to the floor but I kinda got yelled at for that today—I gotta sit on the rug by the door. She says, “Good job” a lot so I behave. And ya know, after a haircut there’s all that cleanin up to do. And to really give Poppy a big thank you, she fixed those great big cinnamon rolls with the yummy sour cream frosting. Oh don’t worry—I GOT NONE. But they go on and on about how good they are so ya know they are. And great big glasses of orange juice—sometimes I wish I was HUMAN so I could eat like that too!

Bye Poppy—see ya tonight and off he goes. Mamaw decided she’d best do some laundry and ya know I gotta help her or she’d never get it done. I have to tell her when the buzzer goes off that the washer or dryer is done. Then I have to help get the clothes in the dryer—or out of the dryer—whichever comes first. It’s a job I tell ya, it’s a job…

September 25, 2010

When Mamaw came to get me up this morning, she already looked like “a walking target.” What the heck is goin on today? We were outside so fast, I almost couldn’t get my job done. She and Poppy are getting their heads together and they’re whisperin so I can’t hear! Well, I know Poppy has to work cause it is Saturday and he always works on Saturday. Mamaw on the other hand has something up her sleeve…

She started the car (even had to put a little heat on today) and came to get me. I DO GET TO GO… well, I thought so last night when they talked. I’d really enjoy it much more if it wasn’t pouring down rain. It makes the car noises so much louder and I don’t like that. I just laid down on the seat and Mamaw gently rubbed me so I had a wonderful time. We drove quite a while to some town called Altoona where she was meetin up with a lady to fix her Grandmothers bracelet her Dodi got for her. I had to sit in the car while she was gone but that was okay. It was cool and rainy and I just laid down and took a nap. When she got back in the car, she continued to gently massage my earlobes. We were only gone for an hour.

September 24,2010

John Swanson and his son, Derek came by the house this morning. I love that John Boy but fell really hard for Derek (he has wonderful blue eyes)—and besides, he got Mamaw’s new laptop so she could get on the Internet. Gotta love those guys…

And John helped Mamaw hang her butterfly outside the house from the walk out basement. She thinks she’s in heaven now.

Aw—Poppy and the guys are goin to play golf at the Legacy. That leaves Mamaw and me to do “our own thing.” As it turns out, “our own thing” was Mamaw goin to the garage and usin that darned SANDER again. Did I tell ya I HATE THAT SANDER! She leaves the door open to the garage and tries to talk me into coming out with her but I wasn’t born yesterday. She worked and worked; bless her.

Pappajohn Sculpture Park

Poppy FINALLY let me use my coupon to go downtown to see the art.  Mamaw insisted on some photos (what else is new?)  We went on September 20, 2010.  Now some comments about some of this stuff:
1.  the white thing with all the capital letters that don't make sense -- Mamaw explained you would have to press 1 for English because the artist is Spanish. (But that one is HER FAVORITE so, we got pics of us!
2. we loved the horse and thought of Emily and Sasha -- Had to get a photo of that one.
3. it's a suitcoat -- Mamaw said she needed a pic of that too!
4. the one thing is 5-sided -- so the dancers to in there too. (Now that was MY FAVORITE)
5. there is a naked lady with her breast hanging down.  Mamaw said, "No picture with HER Poppy." --But that's HIS FAVORITE
6. the white "naked" tree -- Mamaw says that's how far inside us God can see. (Also a favorite of ours)Pappajohn Sculpture Park
7. there are some that Mamaw thinks looks NAUGHTY SO SHE WON'T TELL WHAT SHE THINKS those ARE...

And the rest, you decide!

September 23, 2010

We’re barely up—barely around and there goes Mamaw with her big clippers, down to the area left natural for the geese that think they own our joint. She’s trimming some of that junk back cause she thinks it’s way too over grown. When she came back in, you could just tell she was all in…

But she’s runnin to the basement to start Miss Betty’s laundry. It’s kind of disgusting tryin to slow that woman down. Poppy says he just hasn’t been able to “train her” to slow down.

September 22, 2010

I’m beginning to think Mamaw is in Folsom Prison, workin on a chain gang the way she’s workin herself to death these days…Have ya seen the “ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM” commercial? Well, that’s my Mamaw!

She lookin up and makin calls lookin for replacement windows for our joint. She’s sandin and sandin on her Darrell Swanson Wheel barrel, she sweepin the garage (again), she’s cutting volunteer trees down and in the Geese area she’s cutting down the tall weeds! My God—it scares me just watchin her. And to top it all off—she made me go out on the side deck with her and watch her trying to kills herself putting up her scarecrow and pumpkins and gourds. Just sorta made me feel sick to my tummy.

September 21, 2010

I don’t know which of them is tryin hardest to kill themselves; Mamaw or Poppy. Poppy is just exhausted from workin too many days and Mamaw is tryin to do all the things Poppy does to help him out and I am worried for both of them.

Well, Mamaw irritates me cause she takes on way more than she should. She isn’t supposed to worry about the “common areas” around this place but she says it reflects on her so she just works and works. Now she’s decided she’s gonna buy some fall mums and plant them in the front so we have a little color this fall. And she dragged the wheelbarrow in the garage that Darrell Swanson made for her. She’s gonna sand it down and refinish it… Jessie from up the street is really good doin a man’s work so Mamaw is getting her advice from her. I think this starts tomorrow.

September 20, 2010 (Trip to Pappajohn Sculpture Park) - pictures later...

Things were a little more pleasant around here today. Poppy took me out to do my “chores” but the minute I stepped foot in the door, I ran FAST to Mamaw—she’s still in bed. But she laughs (that’s a good sign) and we love for a while. Poppy even joins in with us. So I just know she’s feelin better. Up and dressed she went to the basement to start washing those handkerchiefs she’s bleachin for Poppy.

And the she almost runs into the living room where her new laptop sits (I’m telling ya, she was so excited Poppy did that for her that she almost wet her pants! Now, wouldn’t that be something else? She and Poppy have to work together cause this new computer has Windows 7 as their operating system and that treats documents differently—oh thank God; Mamaw figured it out. She’s so happy.

September 17, 18 and 19, 2010

Hi Everybody—miss me??? I have had my hands full…Mamaw has had the flu. Thank God she WOULD at least get out of bed long enough to take me outside…I worried about that!

Well, I gotta be honest here. Poppy WAS home on Friday so I got a little help from him. He didn’t tell me, but I think he felt “under the porch” too. I just tried really hard to be available to whoever needed me and stayed out of the way the rest of the time.

But the next couple of days, I was in CHARGE Poppy said. He’s goin to work so I gotta be the “watch dog” and take care of Mamaw. I hate it when Mamaw’s sick! She just lays in bed and sleeps. She moans a lot too. And I really couldn’t get comfortable in the bed with her cause she throws the covers off and then pulls em back up. Go figure!! The phone rang and rang and I just let em ring—if it’s important SOMEBODY will leave a message.

So there you have it---boring…I sure hope she’s better tomorrow!

September 16, 2010

Poppy was up early doin the same process Mamaw does when she’s leavin. It makes me tired just watchin all of that stuff. But, he’s outta here today to go play golf at the Fort Dodge Country Club with John Hunchins and Monsignor. (It’s cold and kinda spittin rain so don’t know how they’re gonna get along).

Mamaw is just stayin out of the way but trying to make sure he doesn’t leave anything behind he might need.

September 15, 2010

Mamaw has laundry started again…and she’s makin Chili on the stove…and the phone rings. Miss Betty thinks she may have had a little stroke and needed our help. She’s gotta to over to the ER at Iowa Methodist Hospital for a check. Dr. Caughlin has been called (too many times already) so we’re on top of that.

Like I said, SHE NEEDS US! And I have a haircut scheduled at 11:00 a.m.—that’s okay, Mamaw says we’re goin over to Vicki’s to help her get dressed and record all of her medications for the hospital records and then come back to drop me off at PetSmart. They “shooed” us dogs out of the bedroom (like I’ve never seen anybody naked before for God’s sake) so Miss Betty could get dressed with assistance. No Mamaw told her she isn’t going to allow her to wallow in pity—that everything was going to work out. In fact, because Miss Betty fell on her left hip, Mamaw and John Swanson (Oh, I love him) think she may have pulled a groin muscle. I sure hope so, she’s worked SO HARD to make the progress she has and we are so proud of her!!!!

September 14, 2010

Up, up and away! We’re up, laundry is started. Poppy is getting ready for work. Mamaw has gotten around too. I’m just watchin to see what happens next.

Mamaw goes to the office and gets on the computer. Poppy leaves for work. I’m alone it seems. She’s workin and workin away and I have to go out so I go tell her I need outside. We go out and it is so nice but I don’t feel like walkin so back we go. I shoulda kept her out there a while cause she went right back to the computer. Is she in love with the darned thing or what? Well, the phone rang and Mamaw answered. “Oh gosh, I forgot,” she said and jumped up—did a couple of “beauty” things, shoved me in the kennel and away she went. She had forgotten that she and Mickey were goin “slumming” for a while.

September 13, 2010

I'm not at liberty to tell you what
happened after this...I am
sworn to secrecy!!!!
This is what happens when you are totally ignored: Reggie came down today to fully introduce Mamaw to the Photoshop Elements program. There were lots of, “I can’t believe it” – “this is a work horse program” – will it do this? – “Can we go through that again”?

I’m left to myself. The day becomes pretty darned long when you are on your own – and not in the kennel! So I had to find my own enjoyment. And remember; I never met a Kleenex or toilet paper I didn’t like. Late afternoon—I’m busted!

September 12, 2010

Mamaw is still workin at getting things together. She’s still got 4 lbs to lose but she wants to get her “big stuff” out of the closets and out of the house! This morning she had her cup of tea and asked Poppy if she could model her dress pants for him. She doesn’t want to keep them if it looks like she’s got “poop” in the bottom she told him. So, one by one, he’s telling her what he thinks of stuff. About an hour later, the green box is full and has the lid on it. The rest are back in her closet. She says she’s done doin that now until she gets one of those boxes out to put away her shorts and summer tops. She took the green box to her car.

Okay—she’ll read the paper now if ya don’t mind. Took her time—enjoyed—just bein a little lazy. I finally let her know I needed to go outside to do my thing—got there just in the knick of time. Poppy is getting ready for work—they talked about drivin down to the Park after he got off work but we’ll wait and see.

September 11, 2010 (9/11 nine year's ago today)

Mamaw had a bad night last night—got up early and took Tylenol and went back to bed. When she woke up the television was all about 911. I wasn’t here then of course, so I asked her about it. She said it was a terrible day in the history of the US. Terrorists flew airplanes into the Twin Towers in New York City and 3,000 people died as a result.

Poppy had to work and it’s really too bad—today would have been a PERFECT DAY for our trip downtown to see the sculpture. So, Mamaw is typing the blog as I dictate it this morning. She listens so good to me. We got em both done and then she wanted to look at her email. I told her that was fine, I wanted to look out the living room window and see what was goin on.

September 10, 2010

Today is OUR day—we’re goin to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park downtown to get me some art education. We’re all up early and then…outside is cold—windy—rainy. Good Lord, what happened? Poppy says let’s wait and see what the weather does a little later. I’m okay with that for now.

Mamaw grabs her dusting rag and off she goes to the office—that means Poppy has to use his laptop. Boy, she is spending a long time in there too. I’ll bet you every piece of paper gets dusted! I’m tryin to stay in there with her but I’m getting in the way so she keeps shooing me out of there. I just wanta make sure she doesn’t throw anything of mine out with the bath water!

September 9, 2010

Mamaw is on a cleaning rampage today! The carpeting looks good—now she has to get the house dusted. She tells me she does a “special dusting” that takes a long time once every spring and once every fall. Well, today’s the day! I’m gonna be really good and just follow her around telling her how beautiful the furniture looks cause that’s what she wants to hear…

She spent just enough time in the office to get our blogs done and then she got right at it. Good thing Poppy is working—she’d be dustin him too! Me—I didn’t get close enough for her to grab me. Sure smells good when she gets a room done though—lemon oil. And her dust rag was so dirty she told me she’s ashamed for not doing it sooner. She got a little caught up in her novel writin. No sweat Mamaw—it’s just us…

September 8. 2010

Up and at it early today! John Swanson is comin to clean up my messes…sorry—I really am. The furniture has been moved and I HATE IT! My idea of a good life is if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it. The carpet is okay with everybody but Mamaw. But I told ya once before, “If Mamaw ain’t happy; AIN’T NOBODY HAPPY.” I see her movin my kennel in the bedroom so that tells me something.

Then I tell her we need to send Poppy an email message about when he can go with us to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park. I been waitin, and waitin and I wanta get there before winter…

September 7, 2010

Today Mamaw is taking Miss Betty back to the doctor. Boy is HE going to be surprised—last month she had to go in a wheelchair and today Mamaw says she is going with just the use of her cane! We’re so proud of her accomplishments! And so with that said, I know there is going to be “down time” in the kennel. She’ll take Betty to lunch too—and I can’t go into the restaurant. I don’t know why they don’t change their rules—after all, I know how to behave…but Mamaw says it has something to do with the state law. Go figure…

Poppy—are ya goin to work again today? When are we gonna get to go to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park? Winter is comin way too fast and I wanta go there. Can’t you get a day to go with us?

September 6, 2010 (Labor Day)

I think I’m gonna have my hands full with Mamaw! She’s getting CABIN FEVER already…She’s been outside most of the day. First it’s those awful crab apples (they’re almost gone though), and then it’s the tree roots comin up through the ground, and then it’s weedin the flowers. I said, “Mamaw—didn’t Miss Betty tell you to take time to smell the roses?” She gave me ‘that don’t go there look.’ It was nice though—she put me on my long leash and I soaked up some of the sun too.

She keeps telling Poppy she’s allergic to me and she’s havin problems with her allergies but let me tell ya what I think! She needs to quit worryin about workin outside and do some dusting on the inside. I’m not brave enough to tell her that but later in the day; she sent an email to my favorite, John Swanson, handsome dude and asked about getting the carpet cleaned. And of course she’s blamed it all on me. “Miss Scarlett’s ‘nervous tummy’ has made a mess of the carpet stuff—I’m sick of hearin about it. Anyway, she thinks we don’t have to do the WHOLE HOUSE—just the living room and hallway. That seems to be where I always end up bein sick. We’ll wait and see what’s goin on in that area—as I said, we’ll wait to see—I’m not goin there!

September 5, 2010

I sure am missin Ozzie today. A fella is walkin his dog and I beg Mamaw to let me out to see him. It just gets lonely without my friends and I haven’t seen any of em. That business of the noises still has me spooked somewhat and I don’t want to take a walk. Well, she let me out and she talked with the fella and I got to see this cute dog, whose name is “hairy” and he was.

Soon after, I wanted out again so Mamaw told Poppy I was goin on a walk one way or another and off we went. It’s cooler today and I don’t mind it as much. She gives me a little space to just smell up the place too so that helps. Today we got up to the curve on the trail and she took my leash off for the first time. I got to be FREE—but I don’t want to be too free. I go a ways and then look back to make sure SHE’S there. This went on until she sees a man with two dogs comin our way and then she leashed me back up. It was a very nice, but scary, experience and she promised me we could try it again when we’re out there all by ourselves.

September 4, 2010

Mamaw told me that her sister, Irene would have had a birthday today if she was still living—she passed away two years ago. Nice the she remembers and acknowledges that.

Poppy is going to work—AGAIN. Mamaw is goin to meet Dodi and Ashton in Johnston—I can’t go. They are goin to a special place where they will fit dancing shoes on Ashton. Mamaw says it’s ‘gonna take a long time.’ So she’s gotta get to the grocery store and get that done before she does anything else.

September 3, 2010

We gotta wash the towels today. After a bath we got so many towels to wash it looks like a hotel around here! I’ve gotten pretty brave in my old age…the noises scared the heck out of me and I’m leery but I can go out on the deck now with Mamaw and Poppy. I’ve been getting my early morning brush out there—feels so good. Then she comes back in and runs the sweeper. She says I’m lots of work…well, what did she expect? That I’d do the work?

Poppy is off to the salt mines again today…Mamaw has those darned apples to pick up. Gets kinda boring around here sometimes. Wish I could play with Ozzie but he’s in southern Iowa with Becky and Cully. When he gets back at the first of the week, I’m gonna ask if he can come play.

September 2, 2010

Poppy is home with us today—Mamaw and I are so happy. She told me she’s not gonna do anything but wait and see what he wants to do. He’s one of those guys that doesn’t know what he’s gonna do till 5 minutes before he does it. (smile) Mamaw has figured him out so she just waits on him.

She got so many pages done yesterday for Emily’s notebook that she’s sittin here today putting them in order. She lets Poppy and I look at it when she’s finished and I tell ya—we are both impressed. We are sure Emily is gonna be too!

September 1, 2010

We’re startin a new month already. And with that, Mamaw has let go of some of her strict rules. Now when we go outside to poop, she let’s me lead the way. Now, it took her how long to figure that out? I’m sorry people; I gotta ‘smell’ my way into a poop. And I like to keep smellin around and get the second one of the day done at the same time. That frees me up for most of the day and it works for me!

We gotta get Poppy’s lunch packed too. Mamaw and I have hardly seen him at all—we’re missin him. He says tomorrow we’ll have OUR DAY. I sure hope that means a nice ride…

August 31, 2010

Poppy and Mamaw were talking this morning about how fast the month of August has gone. The days are getting shorter too! And I can attest to the fact that the leaves have been fallen for almost the WHOLE MONTH! We think it’s awful early this year…fall and winter that is.

Last year in October I remember the wonderful colors of the fallen leaves and me askin Mamaw “if I could keep em.” I was little then; yet saw that nature is a beautiful thing. Not so much this year. Mamaw says she’s glad she got photos of me with all those leaves so we can remember it—me too! I think I was 4-5 months old and already loved the outdoors.
