February 16, 2011 (Mamaw's Birthday)

Poppy made sure he had the day off today to spend with Mamaw—she’s havin another one of those birthdays…she just says she’s a day older—that’s all. Poppy did some errands first thing though so Mamaw and me got around and did a load of laundry in his absence.

We’re not goin to take care of Ozzie today—Mamaw told Miss Becky she wanted the WHOLE DAY for us! And so after lunch (but nobody ate—well, guess Poppy had a scrambled egg) she reached in the coat closet for my red, short leash and I KNEW! Poppy’s car with the smell of leather and that big opening on the top of the car popped open so I could catch other smells. It was delightful—did ya hear me? It was delightful! Poppy took care of a fella who went to barber school just a couple years after him so he wanted to surprise the guy and go get a haircut there.

I was pretty nervous about the whole thing—ya know I’ve been kept inside other than my duty trips all winter and I’m not used to the noises yet. So we went in the shop—cute name too—A Cut Above and Poppy climbed in the chair. I couldn’t settle down—I just shook and shook and then OUT OF NOWHERE CAME A LITTLE POOP! I was horrified—and Mamaw and Poppy were absolutely shocked. She jumped up and got me outside to do the rest and picked up after me so I hope I’ve been forgiven. We rode around a while in the Ankeny area to see how much it has grown and just had a lovely ride—all the while I’m feelin pretty damned guilty…and then back home I went in my kennel. My tummy didn’t feel good. Suddenly, I ran out of that kennel and back on the waterbed where I was gonna be sick! Oh my God—Mamaw don’t be MAD AT ME! AND ON YOUR BIRTHDAY TOO! Well, she grabbed a throw and placed it under me so I didn’t make a mess of her quilt—at least she can wash this. I threw up and threw up—wonder if I got car sick? No sense tryin to make excuses—I DID IT—I’M SORRY.

When I was finished she picked up the throw and headed for the washing machine. I couldn’t do anything but hang my head…she came back and joined me on the bed where Me, Mamaw and MY POPPY all had a nice little nap. I think I’m forgiven…

They had plans to go out for dinner and cocktails but she wouldn’t leave me till she knew I was okay. She told Poppy she would feel awful if I threw up in my kennel and had to stay there. I did that one time and I had to fold my pillow in half so I didn’t have to sleep in it. Mamaw ain’t the only smart one—I’M SMART TOO! Well, I couldn’t have her not enjoyin her birthday so I started draggin first one toy and then another to her to play with me and she caught on that I was gonna be alright now.

They left and went to Nick’s—and Poppy said they had “Surf and Turf.” Course I didn’t get a bite and they didn’t bring home any leftovers so I guess that’s what I get for bein sick. Just simply left out in the rain…

I slept with em a long time though…I really liked that. And would have loved to just hang out with em all night but it didn’t happen…lovingly I feel her lifting me and carrying me to my bed. Happy birthday Mamaw—I’m glad you and OUR POPPY had a good time…

  1. Gee, Scarlett, I'm glad you're feeling better now! It's awful to be sick like that--I was like that once and now I know what it means to be "sicker than a dog"!

I've gotten to ride in the car a lot these last two days. I rode once clear to Oklahoma and back--I do fine. And this morning Ellen, Mom's oldest daughter, came and took me for a run--she wore me out. She's in pretty darn good shape--works out every day. I hope she'll do that some more--I need it!

My mom was able to take me outside on this gorgeous day and brush me. My goodness, did I need that! I could use a bath, but Mom doesn't like to bathe me in the winter time.

One of the grandkids--Chloe, who just turned 3 the other day--put a good-sized pebble up her nose yesterday. The emergency room people in the hospital there in Del Rio spent 3 hours trying to get it out, and then told Joy, Mom's middle daughter, they didn't have the right equipment. Joy called my mom, asking her what to do--drive 3 hours to San Antonio to a REAL hospital??? Mom said to press Chloe's good nostril closed, then put her mouth over Chloe's and blow hard and sharp. So Chloe's dad, Major Behnken, did that and guess what?! The pebble shot out and hit him in the face and Chloe thought that was real funny. I heard Mom tell Papa that Joy and Matt call Chloe "Rocknose" now. I'm proud of my Mom--it seems she always knows what to do!

Talk to you later, Scarlett! Have a good evening!

  2. Oh Pepper--I'm not feeling better. I am "sicker than a dog" and haven't even been able to enjoy Ozzie. The vet says I have "a raging yeast infection" and I gotta have new medicine. Do you like drops in your ears? I hate it, hate it, hate it. Mamaw bought a muzzle cause I keep warnin her to just leave me alone but she doesn't listen. I know your Mom can do anything--Mamaw was tellin Poppy she built the deck out back and they walked down to look at it together--HE WAS IMPRESSED! I hope to see ya soon now Pepper but maybe you better say a little prayer for me to feel better? Mamaw and Poppy are very concerned and I don't want to play or anything--it is AWFUL!
