Things were a little more pleasant around here today. Poppy took me out to do my “chores” but the minute I stepped foot in the door, I ran FAST to Mamaw—she’s still in bed. But she laughs (that’s a good sign) and we love for a while. Poppy even joins in with us. So I just know she’s feelin better. Up and dressed she went to the basement to start washing those handkerchiefs she’s bleachin for Poppy.
And the she almost runs into the living room where her new laptop sits (I’m telling ya, she was so excited Poppy did that for her that she almost wet her pants! Now, wouldn’t that be something else? She and Poppy have to work together cause this new computer has Windows 7 as their operating system and that treats documents differently—oh thank God; Mamaw figured it out. She’s so happy.
Well I’m feelin a little left out so I beg to go outside—and we did. And ya know, I liked it Mickey, I liked it so I even took a mile hike with her. Oh it felt so good to follow those smells; why, my nose was just about on fire with all I had to track down. We got back, she gave me my “snap” treats and told me how wonderful I was (gotta love it when ya got em over a barrel don’t ya?)
And then she asked Poppy if he minded if she went on a long, long walk by herself. Ya know, she’s been sick for 3 days now and just needs to feel FREE. The IPod in her ears and her funky hat on her head, out the door she goes. Poppy and I just look at each other and think to ourselves, it’s a good chance for a nap; and so we did.
When she got back, sweating like there was no tomorrow, Poppy surprised us both and asked, “Would you and Scarlett be interested in driving downtown to the Pappajohn Sculpture Park”? Almost before he had that out of his mouth, Mamaw said, “I’ll go shower and get around.” I got a great education down there too. The Nomande sculpture is all white and has capitol letters all over it AND IT’S HUGE! I asked her why the letters don’t spell anything and she said, “You have to press 1 for English.” I’m not sure I get that—do you?
On our way back home Poppy stopped at Dairy Queen and got Mamaw a wonderful looking Blizzard (that’s ice cream in case you don’t know) and got himself a hot fudge sundae (that’s ice cream too; only with hot black sugary stuff all over the top). It was really hard for me to be good—I wanted a taste SO BAD. Mamaw said no though. Did ya know ice cream and peanuts are things you should never feed a dog????? Wished I wasn’t a dog at that point.
Back home she did allow me to have more “snaps” though – I guess she was trying to make it up to me. Hit the spot! The rest of the afternoon Poppy rested and Mamaw took her barrel Darrell Swanson made her to the neighbor’s and asked to borrow her sander. Oops—her daughter must have it so she’s gonna have to wait. Just like she tells me: wait, wait, wait (chuckle)
Spaghetti and garlic bread for dinner—looked wonderful; smelled wonderful – I got nothing. Not for lack of trying though. And then she cleaned up the “I can’t live without it” table, loaded the dishes in the dishwasher and started running that. Oh my Lord—on top of that she saw the oven was “a mess” and started the self-cleaning on that. Isn’t she ever just going to relax?
She went to the laptop and I was never invited into the bedroom for some “down time” with her. She just clicked away and was very quiet. She’s writtin a novel you know…suppose I’ll catch the brunt of that…And so finally, she just picks me up and puts me in my kennel. I hope it’s not always gonna be that way now.
