It’s really pretty hard for me to know how Mamaw can have so many errands to run…it seems like she does them EVERY DAY! When we got up this morning, Poppy was goin to have to work again…I’m sure missin the car rides we used to take together! Mamaw said she didn’t have plans to go out of the house today and I thought that was pretty swell.
Then the phone rang—it was Poppy. “Are you runnin any errands today Babe,” he asked her. Well, she would never say NO to him and he needed something so he asked her if she would run that over to Valley West. Of course you know the answer to that! She was in the process of washing the bedding and Mr. John had just delivered the exercise bike for her to use in bad weather.
She got duded up—but not too much and said she would just run a couple more errands of her own while she was out. Yeah!!! She wasn’t gone long though and she was happy. She let me out of the kennel and put my leash on and said, “Scarlett, let’s go get Ozzie and we’ll all go outside to go potty.” I was in HEAVEN…did ya hear me? I WAS IN HEAVEN…

The weather seems not to be too bad right now. When we go outside to potty we are staying out a while longer. Mamaw told me she wouldn’t mind if the rest of the winter was this mild—me too. My nose JUST LOVES IT TOO! Ozzie and I have been able to see each other 3 times today—my life is just about perfect!
She tells me she has errands to run – wonder what she’s got up her sleeve today; so I simply asked her. She said, “I’ve got to go to the bank, go to Office Max and pick up a printer cartridge, and go to Michael’s to finish picking up a little something for Catherine’s Christmas. When she started the car, I decided I’d best not be a “pain in the drain” today cause she got really mad at me yesterday about that darned walkin business. I guess you could say I was a willing participant…

It’s a beautiful morning…I’ve been out 3 times to do my duty. I don’t like to “hang around” too long outside (well, unless Ozzie is out) so I usually go pee the first time; poop the second time; and OZZIE THE THIRD TIME…was it Clint Eastwood that said, “Go ahead—make my day”—that’s what Ozzie does for me.
Mamaw is doing a lot of research right now on the copyright laws and proofing materials and all kinds of neat, new things that keep her mind from goin dead. Me? I’m still hangin around on the couch watchin what’s goin on outside and protectin my family. I reckon the whole year is gonna be spent that way, don’t you?
We did go on two terrific walks today and did I make Mamaw mad? I ask again—did I make Mamaw mad? We got down to the trail where she always releases me from my leash now and we had a quiet and vigorous walk. My nose was to the ground most of the time…she kept her eyes focused ahead of us. I would get “delayed” with the smells from time to time and would have to run like crazy to catch up with her. She had informed me she wasn’t goin to wait around on me anymore so I gotta face up to that responsibility. We got to Ashworth Road and she tried to hook me to my leash and I REBELLED…did ya hear me I REBELLED! She chased, she offered a SNAP treat, she did the BAAAAA thing, she did it all and I could tell she was fearful too. That’s cause I get too close to the street and she’s afraid I might forget where I am and run out in the street. She finally turned on her heel (and I mean TURNED ON HER HEAL) and headed back the way we had come. I knew then I was in trouble with her but I ignored all of that and thought maybe she would forget it by the time we got home.

“But Mamaw—I don’t WANT POPPY TO GO TO WORK,” I shouted this morning. I like havin him home (the belly rubs are excellent and I get a little dancing in at the same time). And Mamaw is getting gussied up too! Okay—what’s the deal here?
Well, gussied up and all, she took me outside and I actually got to get my “Ozzie Fix” twice today. I think he’s feelin better—Miss Becky says he acts “like a teenager.” Love that guy…
When Mamaw wanted me to go to my kennel so she could leave me—I resisted. I got that old, loud BAAAAAAA noise from her and I stopped COLD IN MY TRACKS!!! She has a way of putting me in my place I can tell ya. I still made her “herd me in” like livestock cause I wanted her to know I didn’t appreciate it at all! Didn’t matter—she was out the door without a word to me. I think she’s a wee bit upset with me.

January 1, 2011 (New Year's Day)
To start off with this morning, Mamaw says it’s hard to remember to write 2011 instead of 2010. I’ll keep remindin her though…
When I woke up this morning I thought I was dreamin—but maybe not! Poppy was telling her that when she put the gate up last night I would go far enough to make sure it was still there twice (that means I can’t join her on the waterbed.) I hung out with Poppy and finally at 10:00 p.m. I just put myself to bed. He didn’t shut my kennel door, but that was okay—I was tired and went into a deep sleep. I don’t know what woke me up at 2:00-2:30 a.m., but I left my kennel and jumped up on the couch with “My Poppy” layin as close as I could get to him and I put my head on his leg to hold him down…
He said he got up at 7:15-7:30 a.m. but I wasn’t ready to get up. I went to the other end of the couch and put my head on the arm rest and didn’t stir a muscle until around 8ish—that’s when Mamaw got up. Mamaw was amazed that Poppy didn’t close my door but she didn’t chew him out or anything…thank God, right Poppy? We got outside and it was COLD AND WINDY! Was it just 2 days ago it was 60 degrees and we went for a great walk? Know what it is now?—7 degrees. It didn’t take me very long to decide I wanted back in the house. Oh—not that I WANTED IN THE HOUSE—my nose didn’t get its workout but it was too darned COLD!

New Year's Resolutions (The perfect Gospel according to MAMAW)
Mamaw said she wasn’t letting me off this easy…she told me to think about New Year’s Resolutions and I didn’t dictate any to her this morning. She got to thinking and said, “Scarlett, we have to tell what you want to change this year so you have a measurable goal…Bah Humbug…Who wants to measure what? And why didn’t she SHARE her resolutions with me? Is this really ALL ABOUT ME? Suppose we’d better get this over with…
1. I’m gonna try to learn to leave newspapers, napkins and socks alone
2. I want to become more confident of the noises outside that scare the hell out me…
3. Hopefully, I will enjoy walking with Mamaw more (at least when I am off leash)…
4. Try not to bark at every dog I see going by or down the street…
5. Bark less when somebody comes to the door…
6. and try harder NOT TO JUMP UP ON THEM!
I think that’s a lot of “fixin” to do—will let ya know how I come along with it as time goes by…

December 31, 2010 (New Year's Eve)
The day started out being pretty boring but it got rolling later in the day. FedEx showed up with a mini-series called “Taken” and Mamaw and Poppy got into watching those. They made it through 2 of the segments already and then decided to “give it a rest.”
I think we all kind of got the “blues” or the “ate too much stuff I shouldn’t have over the holidays” and there is no energy to be found around here. We’ve napped and done little else. No cooking at all today—just eaten leftovers out of the fridge.
It’s been so icy I haven’t begged to go out very much. I step foot past our overhang and I start slippin around. It’s hard to go potty without the slippage too…Mamaw came in and told Poppy “the weather is bad—it’s icy” and I thought—yeah, tell ME about it!
And there won’t be any Happy New Year party around here. Mamaw plans to be in bed by 11:00 snorin away catchin her Z’s. Guess that means no Happy New Year kisses either! So when SHE wanted to go back to bed, she made me stay with Poppy—she put that damned gate up to keep me out. Alright—I can take a hint! Want to spend time alone—well, ya just go for it!
I’m gonna just lay here with my Poppy and stay warm and out of trouble. See ya next year…
